I hate the Kennedy Center and find the experience uncivilized

But you live in a whole different state, not a different city. I don’t get what’s so hard about saying - I’m from Maryland. Or - I’m from Virginia.

This is so flipping stupid. Do you think Maryland or Virginia actually means anything to someone in Brussels or Ouagadougou or Saigon?

No, but Washington DC does. I’m a native and this is a stupid *ss hill to die on.
I'm the person quoted. I'm just having an internet conversation; this is not a "hill to die on" for me. So let's say you live in Idhao. If you're visiting Brussels and someone asks you where you live, what do you say?

That's not a great example because Idaho is a rural state. A more analogous example would be telling the person you meet in Brussels that you live in LA even though you actually live in Anaheim.

I wish most of the people that posted on this site were actually born/raised here.

I dislike when people that don’t live in DC say they live here.

I hate going into MD and VA and avoid it as much as possible.

I didn’t graduate college.

I didn't realize this site was just for townies.

DP: No travel sports or interest therein. I like my sleep and free time. People who do them are mindless zombies who can't think for themselves.

+1
We're now past those days with our kids, but I absolutely hated the weekend sports rat race. So happy it's over.

I also hate Georgetown Cupcakes

Georgetown cupcakes are 100% a tourist thing at this point. Everybody local knows they are the worst cupcakes in the area.

It would be a sin to sneer at calling it the DMV.

You must be a transplant.

4th generation from DC and I don’t call it the DMV and get annoyed at those who do.

+1000

No greater sign of someone being a transplant than calling the region "DMV."

How do you explain all of the people who aren’t transplants that have used it for decades?

I’ve never heard a non transplant use that term unless it’s someone under the age of 25.

DMV is a black person thing, mostly a black person from the inner ring suburbs of Maryland thing.

I hate Trump but believe we should limit immigration more (including legal educated people, many whom i work and socialize with) because it's destroyed opportunities in our country for my children. I think the world would be better if Asians stayed in Asia and made their countries better, rather than coming here to change ours. Asian countries would benefit from having these smart people innovate in place. Maybe they would develop clean energy and push it across to the rest of the world (knowing the US would be the last adopters). This would help solve climate change.

: Why not just say you're from VA? I have a cousin who lives in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. Who the hell knows where Cedarburg is? She never says that; she says she's from Wisconsin.

I do! super cute town!
The point of that post went right over your head.

Actually, you should provide a history since where are you from is different than where you currently live. You can't just move somewhere and start claiming that localities cachet for yourself. It needs to be earned.
I was born up north and lived in that state for 8 years. I then moved overseas for 5 years. I then moved back to the US to the Midwest for 4 years, and then I moved to a far southern state for 3 years. At 20 I moved to DC. I'm 55 now. When people ask me where I'm from I say I was born in [up north state], but I've lived in DC my whole adult life. I never mention the town where I was born unless somebody asks; unless you're familiar with that state, you wouldn't know the town.
