Men like it a lot. No hand holding, the town is a little hardscrabble (although the violent crime is well below Charlottesville). The UMD alumni have had far greater impact on USA and World economy, culture than almost all peer institutions I believe because of the lack of appeal to weaklings but that's just a opinion. Since the Big Ten invitation UMD has become very hard to get into with incoming SAT/ACTs 4th in the Big Ten basically tied with UCLA but behind the privates and Michigan. It's a big research school with the 8th biggest research budget among publics in the country. The Big Ten invite was mostly due the the research budget and is a Big Ten style school
Including USC? I don't really consider them to be on UMCP's level.
Anonymous wrote:Agree look at William and Mary or even uva. UMD is huge and is in a very run down and not especially safe part of the poorest county around the DC suburbs. It’s gross. I’m from Maryland, and at my school it was looked down upon to go to UMD. Your daughter can do much better.

Stony brook and Bing are excellent in-state schools. Why paying OOS tuition?
Stonybrook is too close. She wants to leave LI. Bing is on the list (and not THAT cheap!).

It's a target on my DD's list. It is very easy for in state high stats.
I know several in-state straight A high rigor, 1600 SAT kids who did not get accepted to UMD. In Maryland, UMD is now a reach school even for high stats kids.
You know several kids with 1600 SAT and straight As? They disclose their grades, scores and their admission decisions?
Yes- MCPS
Yes- people around here talk
Yes- you can see on naviance
Approximately 300 out of about 2 million test takers get a 1600. Impressive connections.

No you don’t. You absolutely do not know “several“ kids with perfect SAT scores who were denied University of Maryland.
The poster might not "know" several kids with perfect SAT scores, but you can see these rejections in the Naviance scattergrams if they do exist.
