Gen Z is very susceptible to social media manipulation. That generation does not have the education or patience to read the NY Times or WSJ or The Economist or other well-sourced and fact-checked reporting. Those media outlets aren't perfect and sometimes get things wrong, but it's the best we have for daily news. Gen Z generally lacks the capacity to even engage with serious, fact-based journalism. And so the algorithms get them with spoon fed 20 second takes. And that goes whatever way Zuckerberg and META - and the Chinese government with TikTok - so choose. Those platforms control their minds. They can dial up support for Trump. And they can dial it down. There is a real lack of well-informed, authentic thought among Gen Z. They are play-doh.

Don Lemon has quite the following. Don’t forget YouTube. Trevor Noah podcasts.

YouTube also has YouTube Live streaming, major networks and advertising, YouTube TV, Google account linkage, and all the data that we fought to have protected as technology emerged in both personsl and professional/technical day to day occurrences back in the late 90s.

Getting “news” from TikTok and IG is a social communication pivot in freedom of speech, where the people choose to trust their research, by going directly to the source. Truth Social, which I’ve never been to in my life, is an example of this. Why wait for someone to tell you about it when they can tell you directly. News has to add depth snd stakeholder engagement that will attract an audience. Ideally, as much as Beyonce can captivate a footbslls stadium..or maybe not enough attention, like the reporting of her sister Solange’s talented work. Disclosing an information source isnt something you can demand of a private American citizen. Reading the feedback of others and interacting in streams, live chats in real time and sharing emotional sentiment while they do it also created behavioral data that ai can often interpret with a high level of relevancy.

And of course, standard reporting through mainstream media outlets includes their own following on TikTok and IG.

Do you also discredit Linkedin? X? Facebook? Do any credible organizations, banking institutions, academic institutions, etc use social media to disseminate information directly to the public?

Are you benefiting financially in any way with the success of social media? Media based on a …community?

I wouldn’t be so dismissive of IG and TikTok users, or Gen Z. I wonder what an aggregate voting profile looks like for clean data.

+1 I don’t want this to derail into another Palestine conversation, but that is how Palestine essentially won over gen z. They received the information without the filter of American News. The 24 hour news channels are going to have cut backs one all of the boomers die. Gen Z doesn’t listen to Fox, CNN, NBC, none of it.

Social media news is only as trustworthy as the people delivering it. Corporate news has its own problems and biases, but at least they hire journalists who (in theory) are independently trained in fact checking, finding credible sources, balancing viewpoints from different sides, and doing interviews, among other things. Social media influencers depend on likes, subscribers, views, and successfully gaming algorithms for their income. Emotions like anger and fear keep eyeballs glued to the screen. Facts take a back seat.

The audience needs to be media literate enough to know which influencers practice responsible journalism and which are clickbait junk. That isn’t always the case for younger gen Z. They want quick, engaging content, not dry analysis.

Democrats could have the best message in the world, but it’s not going to get heard in that environment.

I think they voted for him but I don’t think he has a very strong grip on them. Remember there are only two choices in the election, just because they voted for him doesn’t mean they like him or respect him or are blind followers.

I agree with you. Now what are the Democrats going to do to win their votes in 2026 and 2028? That's the question.

Oh, I've accepted that Donald Trump won the election. But it doesn't alter my view that's he's a POS human enacting awful policies. Just because someone wins doesn't make them right.

Gen Z boys were reacting to the DEI and identity politics that Democrats were espousing for the last 10 years. Think of it from their perspective. If you were a white, Asian, or Latino 18 year old straight male, it became clear you were not welcome in the Democratic Party because of things you have no control over - your race, sexuality, your parents income, your religion, and so on. Progressives identified these boys as the enemy. And GenZ boys responded accordingly and tuned out Democrats and tuned in Joe Rogan.

But that didn't mean for a moment that they liked Trump and the GOP. It's just that Democrats identified them as an enemy. They were always told to be "allies" while the focus was elsewhere. These boys have the same sensibilities as most young people when it comes to health care, the environment, a social safety net, education, and so on. It's just that Democrats went out of their way to antagonize young men. They are as appalled by Trump as everyone, but they feel unwelcome among progressives and the Democratic Party.

The bolded could only be written by someone deep in a right wing fever dream bubble and is so full of BS as to be incomprehensible.

You clearly don't know any 16-24 year white, asian, or latino boys. And black boys are going the same way. Very few of these guys like Trump or Republicans, but they feel completely ostracized and unwelcome in the Democratic Party. That's a party for old rich white and black women who have zero connection with the real world.

ok genius... how do you make the party more oriented towards them? I mean, 100 percent of the policies are for the benefit of young people, people who make less than $300k a year and anyone who is not a nazi...

You can start fixing the problem but not denying that there is a problem. The Democratic platform seems to be "we're perfect and if you don't agree, you're a nazi". Do better.

--signed a lifelong Democrat who would never vote for Trump

Okay. I'll play along, and admit we have a problem. So what could the Democratic party do to make itself more attractive to GenZ males? Biden proposed college debt relief, and advocated for trade school training. He funded infrastructure projects that would put Americans to work. But you're suggesting that isn't enough. What specifically would you like to see from the next Democratic candidate that would say "we made a mistake and here's how we're going to make you welcome in the party?"

DP. Your response demonstrates how out of touch Democrats are with Gen Z men, which was reflected in the shocking movement of Gen Z male voters to Trump. Breaking it down:

College debt relief is only persuasive to people who want to go to college and view it as valuable, which is an increasingly small percentage of the Gen Z male population. Also, it’s perceived as a handout to people who are already rich, again not something that will appeal to young Gen Z men.

Infrastructure projects are mostly useless for Gen Z men. Those jobs are unionized and largely unavailable to the same group. If they even care about the infrastructure bill, they view it as a giveaway to boomers and Gen X.

What should Democrats do to attract Gen Z men back? Focus on jobs creation for jobs they can actually get, not union gifts. For instance, build up the military, rethink a GI bill type of approach. Celebrate blue collar work, don’t disparage it. (I remain convinced that Trump’s genuine pleasure in his McDonald’s campaign was a turning point for a lot of Gen Z men, who saw a man who respected jobs they can get and perform, while the Democrats mocked the jobs.) Drop the incessant identitarianism, it’s incredibly off-putting. Drop the insanity that is defending trans women in women’s sports, it’s a hugely alienating issue for a lot of Gen Z men. Drop blind allegiance to Netanyahu.

Do that, and you might get Gen Z men back.

So be anti-college and promote them working at McDonald’s for the rest of their lives? How does that sound like a great life? It sounds like the effing gilded age.

You don’t want solid, skilled union jobs with a focus on lowering child care and housing and improving education? You know, the DEMOCRATIC platform?!?!

Sigh. You want to just keep losing, don’t you? Let’s get a few things straight.

No Gen Zers actually believe the Democrats care about education any more after Covid, so you can drop that. Trying to convince Gen Z that Democrats care about education will only get hollow laughs.

Union jobs are hoarded by Gen X and Boomers, so are unavailable and mostly useless to Gen Z.

Trump wasn’t being aspirational with the McDonalds gig. He was meeting Gen Z where they are now. And that’s what they see in their future. Democrats mock and disparage those jobs (Harris with her inability to prove any time spent at McDonald’s was so awful, it was so clearly an insult by her). Trump in contrast celebrated the labor. He didn’t change who he was — he was out there with his usual suit and tie — but he telegraphed respect, satisfaction, and pride.

Of course that shouldn’t be the ideal future. But it is what Gen Z has now, and Trump acknowledged that.

I think he telegraphed that he was pandering to GenZ as a counterpoint to the ridiculous narrative of coastal elites (considering the felon is a coastal elite) and echoing the MAGA talking point that college will turn you woke and burn you up in self-hatred.

Also, union jobs are hoarded by GenX—their selfish parents? You’re all over the map.

Of course that shouldn’t be the ideal future. But it is what Gen Z has now, and Trump acknowledged that.

So, GenZ is consigned to a miserable scrap heap of poverty, and Democrats will win them back by saying "Yep, that's all you get". I have a problem with this game plan.

Well, the Democrats haven’t offered anything that would actually help Gen Z men. Trump acknowledges their pain, poverty, and struggle. Democrats essentially tell them to sit down and shut up.

What would really help Gen Z men is an investment in the military and associated education/training/fitness but Democrats will never support that.

Um Dems fully support funding training programs. As a matter of fact, Obama tried that with IT training programs in coal country, but young men still wanted to train on being a coal miner.

https://www.reuters.com/article/world/awaiting-trumps-coal-comeback-miners-reject-retraining-idUSKBN1D14FT/

oh, and Trump wanted to gut those training programs. So blame Trump, not Dems.

Despite broad consensus about coal's bleak future, a years-long effort to diversify the economy of this hard-hit region away from mining is stumbling, with Obama-era jobs retraining classes undersubscribed and future programs at risk under President Donald Trump’s proposed 2018 budget.

Because they are and were useless! Wake up, you cultist! They are undersubscribed because nobody actually gets jobs out of them!

Aaannnnd what's Trump doing about it?

He’s doing nothing. But what he’s not doing is lying to Gen Z men about how he’s helping them with useless job training programs.

The Democrats telegraph over and over and over how stupid they think Gen Z men are. They gaslight about programs like these absolutely useless job training NGO grifts. They tell people who saw their schools shut down and gifted classes gutted that ackshully the Democrats are pro-education. They talk about job creation that is almost entirely closed out to Gen Z.

It’s not that Trump and the Republicans are doing literally anything for Gen Z men. They aren’t. But the Democrats are also not doing anything, while at the same time pretending Gen Z men are too stupid to see how openly Democrats disdain them. So, when both parties do nothing for you, but one of them thinks you are a waste of space and makes that clear, who are you going to pick?

I'm not sure if you are one poster or multiple. But so far you (all) have rejected as useless:
- student loan forgiveness/relief
- educational spending
- training programs focusing on blue collar/trade careers
- infrastructure programs
The only thing you've mentioned as a positive policy opportunity for GenZ is to send more of them into the military. Really??

Your other point is that Democrats should "feel their pain" like Trump does. Not help them. Just feel their inevitable pain and shrug.

I don't know if the Democrats can dig themselves out of the electoral hole, but you've offered no real solutions to the issue of GenZ men.

I do think that Democrats should pursue a "color-blind, gender-blind, identity-blind" set of policies. Not discounting discrimination (which is real) but also not trying to make amends for past transgressions. I think the thing that really stings white Gen-Z men is being blamed for racial disparities that arose during slavery and Jim Crow, generations before they were born. Especially now that their "privilege" really isn't helping them much.
