12:49, what’s supposed to be the main purpose of the department. It’s not clear on their website, although its optics are impressive.

I taught Title I a decade before the Department of Education was formed by Jimmy Carter.

The public law regarding Special Education was put into effect several years before Department of Education.

The Department of Education has contributed nothing but more bureaucracy.

The funds were there prior to Dept of Ed and they will be there after. The Department of Education does not print the money for the students. But, they are responsible for making a mess of student loans and creating more paperwork for teachers.

I think this is important point that Dem supports need to pay attention. While President Carter certainly had good intentions, and I am sure that DoE staff are smart and capable, it's okay to question the effectiveness of the DoE and consider if a different allocation of funding or module of education is needed.

DP. Agreed. But I don't think the Trump administration and the current head of the DoE who has zero qualifications for the job are the ones to fix any existing problems with the DoE. In fact, I think their real intent is to destroy the department. And to distract the MAGA base (which loves nothing more than to see government workers get the axe) while they add $2.4 trillion to the national debt.

No. If states had the legal authority to deal with state issues, they would. DoEd took away state authority. You are fooling no one.

Teacher here, who is home sick today. There is no plans for us to call in sick over this. Stop fear mongering. We had meetings at school and they said it won’t affect the budget as much as people think.

I, personally, am in favor of charter options. Public schools have done downhill in VA in the past ten years and no I am not a troll. I am a real teacher and a parent and yes, my kid has an IEP.

Exactly.

More fraud found......

Deceased Aid Recipients

A cross-check of student aid records against the federal grant logs with the Social Security Death Index revealed that more than $30 million in aid was disbursed to thousands of deceased individuals over the past three years. The Department is strengthening real-time data-sharing with the Social Security Administration to prevent identity theft and avoid such errors in the future.

THIRTY MILLION DOLLARS of FRAUD is an awful lot of our tax dollars down the drain.

Surely everyone here is happy to identify and eliminate fraud, no?

The Department of Education did not exist until Carter created it. i think it was 1980.

I taught before and after the Department of Education was formed.

Title I pre-dates the Department of Education and it will exist after it goes away. Many public laws regarding special education, learning disabilities, etc. pre-date the Department of Education. I was teaching when many of those were enacted.

I don't think people realize what a mess the Dept of Education has been. Student loans existed prior to the Dept of Education. They have always been an issue, but it became much worse under this department.

It is just a bureaucracy peeling off $$ that would be better spent at the local level where the instruction happens.

The Department has no real purpose except to siphon off tax dollars of hard working Americans?

Those are the teachers who need to find a different field. Good riddance.

Children deserve an education, not radical indoctrination.

Shut your mouth MAGA. Teachers are hard working, empathetic, compassionate humans who show your children they care every day. You are probably a nasty lazy stay at home mom who is miserable with life. Just shut it-teachers barely have time to use the restroom never mind indoctrinating your children moron. Get help.

Surely Schumer knows that funding does not cease with the elimination of the Department of Education.

Once more: DOEducation did not exist until 1980. There was federal funding prior to that and there will be federal funding going forward.

Exactly. Get mentally ill, violent kids out of the schools. They need medical care, not classroom teachers to beat up on.

Schools are for learning, not for violent behaviors terrorizing everyone else.

The parent of violent kids must take their child out to keep everyone else safe.

That’s how it used to be before the Dept of Education popped up.

Which medical facilities are those? Who funds them? Who staffs them?

We used to have special schools (and institutions) for those kids with significant behavioral and emotional needs. Now many of them are sitting in regular classrooms disrupting the learning process for others.

Yes. So are you proposing that we reopen those? And if so, who will fund them and staff them?

School systems can use the monies they have to open and operate them and pay teachers more to work in them..

School system funds are being cut everywhere and you all seem to support nuking the Department of Education which also provides funds to school systems. Where is this money coming from?

I would much rather have state taxes and local property taxes fund it than everything going to DC and getting lost in the shuffle of big federal departments.

Totally agree.

I don’t know if that’s even true, much less whether or how the Department of Education has influenced it or not. I have had to pick up my nonviolent kid more than once.

Does your kid have an IEP?

I was thinking kid had to be picked up for a fever or something like that.

Parent should also be required to pick up kid for violent behavior. Why not?

Yes. Defund the unions, and fund separate facilities for violent kids.

Or kick the S out of your kids a couple of times and let them know their crap is unacceptable.

Military/Military School will instill discipline.

Trump was shipped off to military school. What's your excuse for how that fixed him?
