I'm very paranoid about something happening to me and the dog being left unattended for days before someone realizes something is amiss. I'm more worried about the dog than myself.

Reading between the lines in the family statement, his children didn't mention anything about their step mother. They likely didn't have much of a relationship with her, and thus, especially if he had dementia or some other decline in mental functioning, talking with him on the phone might have been difficult.
