Start time Tuesday on the computer models is ~1pm. That's a tough call. Snow likely won't accumulate much on pavement at first -- temps will likely be slightly above freezing at the start and you're also fighting the midday sun angle. Roads will likely be just wet at school dismissal times. But also can't say that with anything close to 100% confidence.

Models are also showing possible freezing rain overnight Weds into Thurs. Temps will again be marginal. But Thursday may also be a closure. (Weds is an almost guaranteed closure.)


I’ll be shocked if school’s open Thursday.

Please, I’m a teacher and I’m the one who said that. Not a teacher hater at all, but I don’t think anyone (parent or teacher) disagrees that district admin is top heavy and bloated with tons of employees who have too little to do for high salaries. So yeah, if they’re finally saying “maybe WE could make enriching activities for kids to do on snow days and not make the teachers do more,” good- they’re finally doing something at least.

That makes no sense considering the snow isn't even starting until at least 11. It's not going to be bad until Tuesday night.


This doesn't work the wise with middle and high school times. FCPS is not going to do this. I'd prefer them be safe than sorry.

We moved here summer of 2017 and I do remember one in that first year or two. It was a disaster and they haven’t done one since. I’ll see if I can find anything about it.


I looked through my emails. There was a 2 hour early release on January 7, 2020. That was probably the last one - the kids were still virtual in the winter of 2021. I think I would have remembered if we had one in 22, 23 or 24.

There was one before 2017 it was a mess all around. I've never seen an early dismissal go well.

If anything, school after SOLs is way more meaningful, enriching learning because we can finally let go of review and test prep. Some of my favorite units are the ones we do from May to June!
