Not to send the thread in an off-topic direction but I like this ratio. I get so confused when I hear people say you should have more than three safeties. Logically, these are the schools you are most likely to get into so why would you waste limited CommonApp slots on sure things?

To compare merit aid. Mine is in at two likelies so far, and there is a 10K difference between them in merit aid. 12 reaches is a ridiculous waste of money.

we know a high states male (white, CS major) who should have applied to more reaches. Full pay/loaded family. No aid. Ended up at safety but had the craziest stats and ECs. Should have maxed out that common app. Think kid applied to 10 schools (3/4/3).

What is wrong with that? It's what most normal people do. The 4 targets means you should get into 2 of them, and you should get into 2 or 3 of the safeties. Applying to more Reaches does not really increase your chances of admission.

Right and sadly PP’s kid won’t go to any of them, but there were classmates of the kid who were rejected from each of these schools because PP’s kid was one of the 18-20 kids that school accepted. And now some senior is sad because they didn’t get into their reach school due to PPs kid collecting acceptances like trophies that will go on a shelf.

Sorry but if people stopped doing this and actually exercised some discernment in applying to only 2-3 safeties, it would really help other kids in this process.

My high stats kid got into a school (Georgia with merit aid--making it in-state) that he's happy to attend. This is now his safety. We just withdrew all the rest of his applications except for reaches (Ivies and similar). He attends a NYC private and while the colleges don't have a quota, things can get difficult for other kids from a high school when a high stats kid also applies.

Wrong. I am the PP whose kid this is. We are a donut hole NOVA family. Kid has a couple of dream schools. Unless kid gets into one of them, which is very, very unlikely, they are taking one of the nearly full-ride merit awards at one of these schools which they are very happy to attend - they have very solid programs in their intended major.

W&M is NOT a safety for anyone. Acceptance rate is 33.5%. That makes it at most a target for a top student

General guidelines: you don't call it a likely unless they accept at least 60%.

Acceptance rates are generally unreliable proxies for selectivity. Look at Northeastern.
