I'm so glad for a return to normalcy.

So for something that is rarely happening, you voted for a maniac that will attempt to destroy our democracy for the future?

This is because Obama had presidential leadership skills. You could disagree with his policies and still feel comfortable with him as the leader of the most powerful country in the world. Trump and Biden have notoriously poor leadership skills and this is why they are/were very unpopular presidents and are strongly disliked/hated by half the country.

Truer words were never spoken. MAGA has an alternate reality where everything is upside down.

Every single thing they accuse dems of, they are doing. Then some.

No. I will give you one clear exception.

People on the right do not support censorship and have not censored the left. (Disagreeing on school curriculum is not “censorship” btw so don’t even start - different issue.)

We learned after Elon Musk purchased Twitter what we already all suspected. The federal government was colluding with big tech to censor tens of thousands of people who disagreed with them. About not just one or two but dozens of political issues. Then, when people started to try to create new platforms, they even tried to ban those platforms from the Apple / Google App Store duopoly. And get people fired from jobs. And get people kicked off Substack and their books removed from Amazon and even their websites pulled by ISPs.

It was the left that tried to create a “disinformation board.”

By contrast, you are all free to criticize Trump or the right or me or my religion as much as you wish. I’ll disagree with you, but I’ll defend your right and ability to do so.

Even now Jen Psaki is delusionally talking about how “laws need to change” - so she and her friends can be in charge of what is considered appropriate information.

This is fundamentally unAmerican. The reason our country exists is to protect freedom of speech, religion, assembly, etc. Anyone that wants to strip Americans of these rights cannot be trusted anywhere near political power.

Everything else I can grouse about and move on but that was the unforgivable sin.

And I’ll let Trump fire whatever bureaucrats he wants or file whatever lawsuits you want and shrug my shoulders unless and until you loose the right to speak out against it. Only then will I have your back again.

Conservatives do indeed censor, with wild abandon. They routinely declare any facts they don't like hearing to be "fake news" even though they can be proven, they engage in self-censorship by boycotting media outlets over "bias" and then turn to even more biased and even less trustworthy far right outlets. They constantly try to cancel individuals and businesses - Bud Light, Gillette, Dixie Chicks, one thing after another. Their "free speech" guy Elon Musk has suspended numerous liberal accounts. Trump has threatened to weaponize the FCC and other agencies to strip licenses from any news outlet that is critical of him. https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/22/media/trump-strip-tv-station-licenses-punish-media/index.html

You are completely clueless and out of touch if you think your side is any champion of free speech. Wake up.

You'll find guys like Jonah Goldberg and David French and the rest of The Dispatch crew have been pointing out the conservative transgressions against free speech for years from a conservative perspective. It's a pretty pervasive problem in the Very Online wings of both parties and a major reason the exhausted majority feels so exhausted.

Boycotts and disagreeing with false narratives are not censorship.

I disagree with Elon’s decision to say “cisgender” is a slur. Still, X allows for a much wider range of speech than 2020 Twitter did.

Trump hasn’t stripped an FCC license from anyone, let’s see what happens.

I do think companies should pay for those licenses. That would help close the federal budget deficit.

Much of what conservatives refer to as "censorship" is also not censorship - for example they claimed it was "censorship" for disinfo to be fact checked. The mere fact that Trump is threatening to revoke long-established media licenses alone is quite chilling.

I think it's time for you to decide if you need to be this emotionally invested in politics. The super invested are like soccer hooligans to most people. It's fun to a point but it's weird. Find something else to love.

+100. This is excellent advice and people really should take it to heart. Politics is not a sport nor should it really even be a hobby.

It’s all fun and games until your same-sex marriage is dissolved. Or you need reproductive care that’s denied. Or crops fail due to extreme heat waves. Federal policies have real world consequences.

Correct. And the country just told the Democratic Party that it’s policies are bad for our safety, health, pocketbook… basically everything. And now trump is bringing in people to turn over the rotting apple cart marriage of the Deep state and special interests. It’s awesome. So glad. And I’m a federal employee who witnesses the waste first hand every day. Cannot wait. No more political friends making a fortune selling DEI training to the government. No more FDA employees revolving door into big pharma and into feed additives. No more revolving door of defense contractors into DoD policy positions. No more hand outs to environmental start ups while ignoring real things that work that can help the environment. NO MORE buying votes via student loan hand outs. Your team is OUT!

Oh honey child. I feel sorry for you if you actually think Trump is going to improve your health, your safety, your pocketbook, I feel sorry for you if you seriously think there's some vast corrupt deep state that he's going to expose and root out, I feel sorry for you if you think he will help fix the environment or end revolving doors of government or get rid of wasteful defense contracting.

He did NONE of that in his first term and in fact made a lot of those things worse. Get back to us a year from now, two years from now, three years from now, four years from now and let's see if you can still make those statements with a straight face and not get laughed out of the room.

Well, there's all of the mentally ill people who had mental breakdowns over wearing a mask or getting a vaccine in the middle of a pandemic that killed over a million Americans, the ones who had a massive mental breakdown on January 6th and all of the ones who had mental breakdowns and refused to admit that Trump lost in 2020 and came up with all kinds of crazy conspiracy theories rather than just accepting reality. There certainly is a mental health crisis in America that needs treatment.

My graduate student loan rate tripled between my first and second year because one of Obama’s first actions was to enact a rule that created general student loan forgiveness. I took out one last student loan under this higher rate (over 11%). I paid it off first because the interest was crippling. It took three years of living with my parents as an adult and paying off my loans like they were mortgage payments until I paid them off.

Every time I hear a Democrat promise student loan forgiveness, I remember being screwed over by them while I was a student and feeling bogged down for years. I knew I was signing up to pay them back. I didn’t realize I was also paying them off so peers didn’t have to pay theirs back. I’m a Republican now.

I don’t get this line of thinking. I took unpaid maternity leaves, but I support paid parental leave for new parents.

DH and I paid off our student loans around 2014 and I support ways to make education more affordable.

I was born in the U.S., but I support paths to citizenship.

I am also grateful for all the people who came before me who fought for my right to vote, open a bank account, marry whoever I want, etc. When did we stop caring about making life better for the people who come after us?

We stopped because Trump told us to stop.
