We are a large and complicated city and congressional representatives are already tied down with addressing the needs of their own constituents that they are supposed to represent.

There is no possible way that congress has the time to actually get into the nitty gritty detail of governing our city.... other than to enact some 'pet' issues for show and media sound bytes.

It is really a simple three step process:

1. Arrest those who commit crimes.
2. Have actual trials for those arrested.
3. Have those convicted of crimes spend time in jail. Extra 15 years if a weapon is used in commission of the crime.

Even those dim witted representatives from the South and the flyover states can figure it out.

lol then why haven’t they figured it out yet? there are many reforms that could improve criminal justice in DC - confirming judges in a timely manner is a big one. there’s nothing stopping Mr Jr Rep from Flyover State from drafting a bill to improve criminal justice in DC.

But we all know what this really is: just another node in the culture wars. Instead of judges, blather about right-on-red being an American entitlement.

+1 the fact they aren't working to confirm judges and fill vacancies RIGHT NOW is evidence they don't actually give a sh*t.

Have you seen some of the gems Biden has sent up for confirmation? These folks aren’t there to convict criminals.

Judicial nominations have to be a political compromise. If not it becomes a stalemate and no judges will ever get confirmed. This may be less disruptive for federal judges but it’s extremely disruptive for DC.

+1 and is a reason DC needs self government rather than being dependent on the whims of congress regardless of who has the majority

We already are held hostage between political parties and it would only get worse to put more bureaucracy in the hands of people who have no interest motivation nor time to govern our city.

Self governance would be great, but DC has demonstrated time and again that it is not capable of self governance. This is in part because DC is a one-party town, so there is no natural check to the worst behaviors of the governing party. DC absolutely needs some sort of outside force to achieve any sort of sanity. Give DC more control over itself in its current state, and it will descend into madness that much quicker.

Do you hear yourself? Outsiders who don’t like the way a locality votes to govern itself should be ruled over by people who don’t live there? In the USA you think that is ok?

Since this is a parenting forum, think of it in parenting terms. Maybe you let the kids wear whatever clothes they want, to a certain degree. But there comes a point where the adult has to say "no, you can't wear that." DC needs a parent to stop them from wearing something inappropriate. DC's response so far has been "but Mom, other kids are wearing this too!" Which is exactly the response you get from a teen that wants more control than they can handle.

To add more flavor to this analogy, DC has been in Juvie and the Foster care system (appointed mayors + control board), so they don't have a long record of making good decisions on their own. Is it really good parenting to let DC just get stoned and commit crimes all day? Someone has to step in and stop them, because they certainly can't help themselves.

To be clear, you don't like how DC citizens vote, so you want to override them with your own personal views like a dictator. You are free to move, but instead you just prefer to implement your views against the will of DC voters. This is what you are saying over and over again repeatedly. Maybe you should adopt your writings into your own personal Mein Kampf?

These types of histrionics are exactly why DC is in the state its in. Posts like these are practically begging an adult to come in and take over.

Democracy was never meant for people who can't rule themselves:

DC was long and successfully ruled by appointed Mayors with a dash of Control Board thrown in. Its time to take the car keys from the rebellious teens, they are grounded.

If they want to run a city into the ground, they can do that in a city that's not also the Nation's Capital.

Well shoot, I guess this non-religious atheist needs you to run my life. Thanks. Shall we force religion in DC then to "fix" it?

Except crime declined under Democratic leadership and is already Declining right now under democratic leadership, and sacrificing control of DC also means sacrificing control of women's healthcare rights against the will of DC voters (I know, I know, you are republican so don't care about women's healthcare). And crime is high in plenty of GOP led cities.

You're all bluster and no substance.

What makes you the adult who gets to decide that 700,000 of your fellow citizens are just dopey kids who need to be put back in line? This whole analogy is incredibly condescending.

D.C. had a long history of appointed mayors before Home Rule, that's true, but do you really think it was entirely because people made disinterested calculations of whether the city could run itself? One hint might be that Congress allowed local elections until shortly after black Washingtonians were allowed to vote. I don't think the long history of the post-Civil War and Jim Crow periods necessarily ought to count against D.C. voting rights now. There was a control board more recently, yes, but it's been abolished for 23 years, and the city's finances are fine now. People talk about it like it was just last week.

You may find the analogy condescending, but you didn't say it was inaccurate. Would anyone portray DC as some striver kid that's always on time for school and does their homework? What about an adult that's successfully launched? A leader of their peers?

DC in FY 24 was "fine" but FY25 had a $700 Million structural deficit that had to be patched over with sleight of hand, and future years are only going to be worse. Costs are growing at 7.5% per year while revenue is growing 2%. Go read it yourself if you don't believe me: https://mayor.dc.gov/page/fy25-budget-strategic-investments-and-shared-sacrifice
This is not sustainable, and no DC elected official is going to change anything until made to by outside forces.

Yes, but of course, if the city proposes a tax increase, that's also seen as a sign that it's time to go call in the adults...

DP to add and you also want the GOP to takeover DC EVEN WHEN crime is already declining under democratic leadership, and previously declined under democratic leadership. Yes, there was a spike. Do you want the federal government to take over when republican led cities also have high crime just like DC does? Or just DC?

You say get tough on crime while also getting rid of traffic laws that protect us from the most frequent cause of harm. You make no sense.

"Stewardess, I speak Republican."

I’m a lifelong Dem

Translation: "I'm a disingenuous Republican poorly imitating a Democrat."

tough on crime

Translation: I want to see police arrest more black people. I don't care at all about crime in general, as evidenced by the fact that I have no interest in prosecuting the biggest thieves in all of the US (white collar wage thieves) or voting for politicians who actually have long-term solutions for the root causes of crime (increasing social safety nets, eliminating systemic racism, reducing income inequality, ending the drug war, etc.) I just want to see black people in jail.

You just have to speak their language.

What are you talking about? "Dems" don't have a bad name.

If you'd like your streets to be clean, quiet, and safe, then you should support automated traffic enforcement (including red light cameras) and No Turn On Red.

+1 it's a troll pretending to be a democrat...

And repeatedly not commenting on the risk of losing abortion/contraception rights for women in DC with GOP control. Nope, not a democrat.

We won’t lose the rights don’t worry. But stand to gain no ATVs no corruption no ANC no pot smell no income tax etc

We’ve heard “don’t worry “ before…

Anonymous wrote:Okay with automated traffic camera, but why no turn on red? It is said that when the Council passed this in the Barry administration, the mayor already had a contract with a cony for making and posting no turn on red signs all over the city.

As a result, there are in fact very few places in DC where you can now do a right on red, so what necessitates a ban? In my view right on red is a great thing and puts us on par with our neighboring states, indeed with almost all of the states. Why is DC so special that we can't have right turn on red?

Right on red is a disproportionately dangerous maneuver, especially in an urban area. While it doesn't produce a ton of fatalities, it produces tons of injuries for pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers. Almost every vehicle has to stick its front into a crosswalk to see oncoming traffic. Drivers looking in one direction for cars often miss people on the sidewalk going the other direction.

Right on Red may have made sense once upon a time, but things have changed too much in urban areas for it to make sense anymore. When people had small cars with clear glass, and there wasn't always an illegally parked car blocking your view, maybe it was safe enough to pull off. Now, good luck seeing through/around that blacked-out Suburban in the lane next to you and the blacked-out Range Rover illegally parked on the corner. Now when you pull into the crosswalk with your F-150, you're also hitting pedestrians in the head/torso instead of legs.

This is just one way drivers have essentially worked against their collective interests, while focusing on their own individual interests. If you make cars more dangerous to those outside them, then the law has to rebalance the total risk budget to get injuries lower.

It didn't even make sense when it was adopted in the 1970s. There were already studies by 1982 that found that Right Turn On Red had increased crashes at signalized intersections, especially in urban areas, with pedestrians, and with pedestrians in urban areas.
