Family member from public in similar metropolitan area to DMV wrote LOCI to Wisconsin and got in (prior year). Didn't rely on counselor. Add specific details about the "why Wisconsin," including embrace of the cold!


Just a piece of advice, def send a LOCI; do not reference the cold, or the sports or madison, but rather what specific programs and classes or certificates etc are they interested in. HOw will they contribute to the life of the school - what clubs or other activities do they envision participating in?


More advice based on close friend of my DS 23 who got in to the B-program after being deferred-- Send in the LOCI and any other achievements since the application. Madison is BIG on the "why Madison" question. Include BOTH specific programs and activities where your student can contribute to the community, especially if they show he has made contact or otherwise knows about them beyond the website. If it fits, no harm in referencing that you are leaning into the cold- some see it as a feature and not a bug

Selective schools are selective. Cast a wide net. Prepare yourself emotionally for the most likely outcome when applying to selective schools (rejection).

Got into UMD but not into. Just a vent. I can't believe we will have no idea where he's going until the spring. So torturous.


At least your kid has a first choice. This is better than having a kid engulfed by ennui

I'm not sure why you say "meh" to Texas. Awesome city and one of the fastest growing in the US. It's the live music cap of the Southwest.

I was fortunate to have met great friends there. We all were nobodies back in the day but had a great time. The school is very friendly.

Many years ago while at UT, I made friends with Matthew McConaughey, Jon Hamm, and Renee Zellweger. We were all just kids at the time.

Oddly, we still stay in touch. Even Glen Powell (top gun maverick (hangman) met us in Austin for a night out not long ago. Epic night out!

I'm stuck on the "especially because his close friend got in." I know that has to hurt-- totally do the the letter of commitment, etc., but also let him know that he could apply to other UW schools besides MAdision-- I imagine some could even be open enrollment. He may even enjoy starting at a smaller school the first year then transfering to Madison. (Lots of kids do this!) And he could cheer for UW at the big football games etc. in MAdision with his friend.

Sure, the kid can be sad. But mom admitted that the kid isn't concerned, but MOM is turning it into drama. So now a kid who was handling the situation as well as can be expected is going to get sad and upset not because she didn't get into school, but because she let down her mom. That's a crappy parenting move.

Just in last few years, several average good students from my circle who attended community college than regional state universities, were hired by IBM, Microsoft, Cisco, American Airlines etc. Just work hard and focus on finding good internships. College admission phase is over, put it out of mind.
