I like hearing people use these words and I don't understand why it bothers others but I am well aware it does so I curtail my speech when needed. Sometimes when a $5 word is all you can think of and you are mentally trying to dumb down your speech you end up using a $10 word. I think it's a bigger issue for people who speak multiple languages because the big English word is the more common cognate in the other language.

This is my theory as to why most people get further/farther wrong. They like the way further sounds (because it's more British) but generally they mean farther.
