It would be GREAT if tonight ended up as a rebuke of Youngkin.
He staked his political future on the outcomes of tonight. Heās done. What a swing and a miss. Between this and his embarrassing comment that the midterms would āsend a messageā to Biden itās plainly obvious he doesnāt have his finger on the pulse of the electorate.
Clearly the fearmongering about crime and trannies failed. What phantom menace will Republicans try to scare voters about in 2024?
I'm not a Youngkin fan, but if he wants a political future I think he still has one - but Trump has to lose the '24 election for it to be a possibility. Youngkin can walk away for a couple of years and then reappear as a conservative stalwart in the mode of conservatism prior to Trump's entry on the scene. He can also seek to be more moderate in VA his remaining time in office. I'd argue that Youngkin is not in a terrible place politically if his ultimate goal is higher office in '28 or beyond.
Maybe although that would be framed as a ācomeback.ā And I donāt think he is a Bill Clinton kind of comeback kid. His political instincts just arenāt particularly good.
+1. He only won because everything aligned perfectly. NOVA moms were furious over the Dem Governor letting school closings drag on for a full year, McAuliffe was not paying attention to that issue, was not talking to suburban women and was not that well liked to begin with. Plus, he had the āwhat parents want doesnāt matterā line. Which was infuriating to many of us felt like he was brushing away the very real damage closing schools for that long had done to our kids. Of course, Youngkin and Rs took to mean a single parent can dictate the English curriculum and contents of the school library, which is not where most NOVA parents are.
If suburban women were not so pissed off at the Dem leaders in VA over school closings. Or, if we had a better candidate than McAuliffe, Youngkin wouldnāt have won. Heāll never win again, because heāll never get that lucky again.
Plus, he seemed very NOVA palatable moderate, business friendly, socially moderate, which can work in VA. Of course, he was not that at all. But, he had no political track record. Now, he does.
