Love Samsclub for the scan with phone function. Wish Costco had the same.
I agree with you on annoying self checkouts at Costco. Why can’t I just scan the barcodes? They do check at the door so it’s not like I can shoplift.
The cashiers also started asking to unload the cart instead of just putting things barcodes up and scanning them in the cart.
Super annoying
I love when I get a fast employee at Costco who will scan inside my cart! Only during busy times though, otherwise I have to do it myself and take all the items out. Though I’ve found if you mess something up they will sometimes just finish for you. The phone scanner at Sam’s is good, but in general we just a crappy Sam’s that isn’t as well run or as well stocked as Sam’s in other places. I have no idea why.
I got sighs and almost a reprimand last time I didn’t unload my cart at Costco.
You have to look confused and sort of helpless, like you will be really slow. I've noticed at my Costco they almost always scan for all of the old people in self checkout, whereas I'm probably 50/50. I tried to look as slow as possible though and I also try to go to a self-checkout that has an efficient-looking employee standing next to it (if multiple stations are open at once.)

+1 you can avoid these problems by using the scanner
Giant could avoid all these problems by staffing their checkout lanes with actual people.
The self-checkout was fine when it was more convenient for the customer - i.e. - you needed a gallon of milk and it was faster to scan and pay on your own. But now it's just a degradation of service versus a convenience for the customer and a way of depriving a person of a job by the corporation. I feel like starting a movement to boycott self-checkout.
Well, that’s not going to happen. And your last sentence is Big Boomer energy (and before you say it, yes, even if you’re not chronologically a Boomer).
Almost everyone on here hates self-checkout (the scanners are different) - so why not? We all complain but then we just go along with what the corporation wants us to do. We don't have to.
Anonymous wrote:I don't have any of these problems. Big fan of self check! Also if you have more than 20 items and are going thru self check (minus the scanner people) you are a jerk. It takes way longer than using the manned lane especially when you don't know what you are doing.

I’m really over this everywhere. Companies keep finding more ways to put the burden of service onto customers while simultaneously increasing prices.
Just left there. Check out station light blinking and employee checking his phone and perusing the candy….and stop asking me to donate. They literally do nothing on your behalf but they want to donate your money to someone else, on your behalf.

Or maybe they’ll be like those new Amazon Go stores where your items are automatically scanned when you put them in your cart and you just walk out the door when you’re done. I think I heard there’s one in DC? Anyone tried it?
