Regarding Greenhouse, it was a wonderful experience, enriched by the Columbia faculty parents of diverse expertise that had their children enrolled there. The faculty kids were mainly headed to the School at Columbia. I think regarding exmissions, you need to have a discussion about your goals early on.

Can you share a little bit of your experience at Greenhouse? This is one of the lower key preschools we are considering versus a Park Children’s or West Side Montessori. I really thought the curriculum at Greenhouse was so special. Did you feel well supported during exmissions?

My kid went to Columbia Greenhouse and ended up at Chapin. I agree with some of the others that you want to be a preschool where your child is the only one from the preschool applying.

May I suggest considering The Caedmon School on East 80th Street, between 1st and York? It is an excellent Montessori-based school that offers both pre-K and a K-5th grade program.

The focus on early childhood and elementary education has been outstanding for our family. Wonderful, friendly kids, and great families. Not a pressure cooker.

Many graduates go to HM, Riverdale, Collegiate, Chapin, etc. Our daughter has been there for eight years and will be attending The Brearley School in September.

I’d also disagree with that statement. Everyone I know at Brick seems very happy overall. And as mentioned, exmissions have been strong including this latest round (meaning earlier this month).


Can someone share recent exmissions from these preschools who don’t advertise broadly?

Without getting into specific numbers, this year Brick placed numerous kids at Brearley, Chapin, Nightingale, Sacred Heart and Spence for girls (SH had the most), Buckley, Collegiate, St B, and St D for boys (Buckley the most), and Dalton, Riverdale and Trinity for coed (Dalton the most). I assume that Episcopal is similar. I would guess that STMPG weighs a bit more heavily towards SH and St D, but with a mix at the other schools as well.

I saw a summary of Brick's ongoing school admissions for this year, and they had excellent results. Obviously Brick does have many legacies (and siblings), so that does have an impact. But still... do not worry, exmissions are definitely not in shambles.

The school I attended would be considered one of the academically rigorous TTs and I never felt that it was a so-called "pressure cooker" in any way. The school gave us remarkable opportunities to explore, join and start clubs to follow our interests, and engage at a deep intellectual level across so many subjects. It honestly just felt magical to have that chance. Sure, we all worked hard but I don't ever recall it feeling like an unwanted grind.

Had my parents forced tutoring on me, I'm not sure I would have developed the same love for academics.


A child doesn't view it as tutoring, it is a parent giving their child a remarkable opportunities to explore and follow their interest in math and engaging at a deep intellectual level. For many children it feels magical to have that chance, because their school doesn't challenge them enough.


Ha a real math prodigy doesn’t need tutoring at lower school

Developing emotional intelligence and the love of learning is the priority for many preschools. The academics is secondary.
