This is for military and DOD civilians and completely separate from that of the proposed average 5.2% GS pay increase.
This. Federal pay raises started lagging inflation when military pay raises started being treated separately (Obama was happy to freeze civilian pay, but the optics of freezing military pay would have been bad, so they were separated). Republicans win because they can give the troops a raise and screw feds.
DoD civilians are on the GS scale. You can’t amend their pay without amending everyone else, just as you can’t cut everyone without cutting them.
Not all of us are GS. I’m a DOD civilian on an AD scale.
I'm an ED employee on the AD scale. AD employees dont get the COLA pay raise by law, just convention. My boss whose been with the agency 15 years said to me theyve never not given it to the AD employees.

I was just summarizing the article, I have no idea why you're getting so riled up over abortion. It doesn't matter to me what the federal plans cover. The fact is the GOP seems to be focusing on denying abortion coverage (whatever impact that may or may not have) rather than denying a pay raise, which is probably a good thing for federal workers, since this will go nowhere in the Senate.
The House appropriations bill discussed in the article contains the following provisions:
"SEC. 613. No funds appropriated by this Act shall be available to pay for an abortion, or the administrative expenses in connection with any health plan under the Federal employees health benefits program which provides any benefits or coverage for abortions.
SEC. 614. The provision of section 613 shall not apply where the life of the mother would be endangered if the fetus were carried to term, or the pregnancy is the result of an act of rape or incest."

I’ve been at one agency where it wasn’t that wide. Most people just took some lateral that a friend offered them who didn’t want to see them lose their job 2 years before they retired and had an opening in something for which they qualified. They’d take a demotion and the agency gave them their salary up to like 2 years or whatever it was, but they still felt demoralized, although grateful they still had a job. Others just left and went onto the displaced employees list.

FEHB plans will cover some of the costs of a D+C if the baby is dead. Won't cover anesthesia, so you better be ok with getting scraped in a doctors office or else paying $2000 out of pocket to get knocked out.
This is patently false. I’ve had 2 recent d+c’s under general anesthesia for missed miscarriages and each time payed only whatever the standard copay was for any outpatient surgery (I think $75-100) with federal blue cross basic.

Feds are not guaranteed promotions every year. Our step increases aren’t even every year (unless you’re a step 1-3 I think? Maybe those are every 2 years).
And we lag behind the private sector on salaries across the board.
There is a program for some specialties at lower grades that promote yearly to the next grade - if the employee meets the performance standard. My agency does this for IT professionals - they go from 7-9-11 over 2 years. But it isn’t automatic; the supervisors have to approve the promotion based on performance. If they didn’t have this program, it would be extremely difficult to retain the IT professionals that we just trained.

Fed employee. I am grateful for my job and salary. I work 10+ hour days with no overtime because we are so backed up, and its a hassle to get to OT approved. Yeah, I could stop work at exactly 8 hours, but I know my job is important. I’m in IT and manage a few mid sized programs. Honestly, my agency, putting in a few extra hours is expected.
I have people working for me with degrees, been working for the federal government for years, and make less than $90k as IT professionals. If they were to take their skills and experience to the public sector, they could make a lot more money. They are hard workers, smart and thorough.
I think they are like me - enjoy the job, want to be a part of something meaningful - and they like the stability and retirement benefits.
Personally, my parents never planned for retirement and we are helping them out. I never want to do that to my kids.
I have people working for me with degrees, been working for the federal government for years, and make less than $90k as IT professionals. If they were to take their skills and experience to the public sector, they could make a lot more money. They are hard workers, smart and thorough.
