Teachers and admin risk losing their jobs if they try to punish or expel attackers. How are they to know when they have reached a point where they have disproportionately suspended too many POC? It's impossible. What is possible is ignoring the violence as you don't lose your job over a victim's parents yelling at you and eventually the parents give up or move to Arlington or Fairfax. And no, Alexandria does not want police in the schools as their presence is considered racist by the community.

Listen to the testimony from the parents (the link is up thread). They did get a protective order. The school said they couldn't enforce it and that "violence" is a gray area.

And no...they don't expel these kids. They don't even remove them from the school. The attackers who did this to this kid is likely doing more of the same today and will be tomorrow. Teachers saw the lunchroom attack and ignored it.

This kid is being forced to do virtual school while his attackers roam the halls at GW preying on others.

This has been going on for years under the previous principal too.

I wrote to the school board about this kid's horrific experience and asked why the attackers are still in the building. How are they protecting other kids? Do they support the GW administrations stance that "violence is a gray area"? Why is violence a gray area? How does that gray area intersect with the law? Is this violence acceptable to the board?

Support parents who speak out and don't tolerate violence against their child.

They don’t drink water - it’s hard to carry around a water bottle anyway, now that backpacks are banned from the halls except for arrival and dismissal — so that helps.

If you go to the bathroom at GW, you go with at least two of your own crew. I’ve never heard of anyone going by themselves and if they do they should switch to private school as they don’t have the street smarts to survive ACPS.

DP. I teach in a different district. My school isn't as rough as the ones in ACHS but we have a lot of fights in the bathrooms and kids get threatened while admin pretends nothing is happening. Yes, kids go all day without using the bathroom. They hold it and don't drink much water or other liquid during the day. If it gets really bad they'll fake a stomachache and go to the clinic and use the bathroom there.

The PP who mentioned alternative placements is 100% correct. Every single school district in the country is seeing this although few are acting on it.

The bathrooms at Hammond seem to be pretty bad, too. Not unmitigated violence like at GW, but bad enough that my kids say they avoid them completely. And even if they wanted to use them, they’re usually locked because the school is doing its best to prevent all of those problems. (Side note… They do not and could not possibly pay those teachers enough.)

There are just too many kids in these buildings, period. There are also kids in these buildings who need an alternative environment and should not be around other children until they can be safely re-integrated into a mainstream school setting.

Keep in mind that this is not a one off. I know of parents who don't make a fuss when their kids are targeted. And if the attackers are doing this to one kid, they are doing it to many.
