WTF is a “whole person”? I’m trying to find an interpretation of this statement that doesn’t imply the “black legacy” is less than a “whole person,” but I don’t know what that would be. Is this just a typo? Or just one hell of a Freudian slip?

I don't know if the figures you stated are true, but so what? My friend's a Harvard alum, as was his dad, so as a legacy, his (white) kid has a 30% chance of admissions. That's a hell of a lot better than the 3-5% chance non legacy kids would have. But, we're not talking about legacy admissions. We've worked with 2 private counselors and both have told us black students (especially girls) absolutely need rigor, high GPA and test scores to be admitted at T25 schools. First Gen, veterans and increasingly boys, are the new institutional priorities.

My dc loves Carnegie Mellon. It is not for everyone, but it is a great fit for my dc. If your kid is a nerd type and enjoys challenging STEM classes, it's an excellent place.

Many URMs attend “lower ranked” high schools that do not offer as many AP sections. This is the case of my DC. Their gpa was a 4.4 at ED application time. Admitted to UVA, but would have taken more APs if they had more sections. For example, only two AP Calc BC were offered this year. My kid is a URM, but their friends are not, and a few were admitted with similar gpa and standardized scores.

So, yes, often “minorities” are admitted to UVA with lower gpa’s by no fault of their own. Also, standardized test scores are not considered as much as gpa and rigor.

My DC is very interested in Tufts, would love to hear more! He and we only know one person in real life who went there but it was many years ago so an out of date experience. What types of extracurriculars does your child do? How big are their classes- I think DC would like smaller classes with discussion versus large lectures. We will visit over spring break. NP. I literally had no idea WF was ranked 29. Now I totally get why the middle of the road kids at our private ED rolling to Wake in September. It is the easiest top 30 to get into, right?

Florida UNC UVA are also relatively easy for in-state
These are all good options if you can't break into T25.

UVA is not “relatively easy to get into”. From NOVA you need a 4.53 gpa, a 34 ACT or 1520 SAT, be in the top 5 percent if your high school class, take the most rigorous course load your high school offers and have extraordinary ECs

Hence I said 'relatively easy' as a T30 or T25 school.
It's acceptance rate is like 20%?  
Half of my kid's friends got in, including my kid from a NOVA public.
 
There lower ranked schools that are harder to get with and higher stats such as Tufts, BU, BC, Northeastern, maybe Georgia Tech

Isn't Georgia Tech harder to get in In-state and OOS?
