You’re not alone. I wouldn’t let my girl who loves ballet wear a tutu to school either, not even to make a statement or get attention but just because she loves it. It’s disrespectful already but it’s a thousand times worse when a boy is just doing it to shock and get attention and make a mockery of their school.

It’s actually pretty sad though, if you think about it. I guess it’s better a tutu than a gun or something else dangerous though. Those kids obviously have problems.

You guess? Like you aren’t sure whether wearing a tutu or bringing a gun to school is worse so you have to guess? Trivializing school violence is hugely disrespectful to teachers. Bullying kids who are gender nonconformists is too. Wearing the tutu is fine.

We have three rules for clothing in our family

1) you have to like the way that you look in it
2) it has to be appropriate for the event (ie if we are going to a wedding you dress fancy. I don’t care if you wear pants or a dress or a smock, but it needs to be fancy)
3) anyone who meets rules one and two will be respected regarding their clothing choice.

If the school doesn’t have a uniform and a tutu meets its dress code, he can wear. Personally, I think the look is questionable to put it politely, but so long as it meets the first two rules my child may wear it and I will abide by rule three.

For what it’s worth dh and I are attorneys by training and dress like it.
