I had my boys circ'd for many reasons but I really don't think it compares to sterilizing animals. It's just not the same thing.

We did not circumcise, and so far everything seems fine. Kid is a teen and only asked about it once. We are Jewish, and he asked why we didn't do it, and I told him that after he was born, I just couldn't let anyone cut anything off my baby for any reason. It was true. He never brought it up again.

(Either is fine and I fully support letting the male parent choose if there is one.)

Why?

DP - this is what we did. Because I don’t know what it is like to have a penis. Not even the slightest idea except that it seems ungainly - like having a tail in the front. I would not like one.

Same. I think that a lot of Americans don't realize how out of the norm this practice is compared with other countries.

I think a lot of Americans don't realize how normal this practice is in countries with majority Jewish and Muslim populations. Earth is more than America and Europe.

America is the only country were circumcision is common if you aren’t Muslim or Jewish

You need to toss Canada, Australia, and New Zealand into that category. All have above average non-religious circumcision rates. America isn't so special after all.

Have you asked your son about that?

No. But he was left with an unsightly skin bridge scar from it. And now I know that it was totally unnecessary.

Circumcision is male genital mutilation. It is interesting that we in the US criticize other cultures for female genital mutilation and we do it ourselves to our boys.

The research has not played out to show a benefit to doing this at a population level. If a man engages in high risk sexual behaviors where the procedure might be beneficial, he could get the procedure himself at his own decision. I will support my sons in this regard if needed.

Female mutilation is to keep girls chaste and ensure modesty enforced by the male society. The form of Female mutilation you are comparing to circumcision is cutting off a female's clitoris. This is means she will never have enjoyment sensation out of sex. Circumcision does not affect this for men. NOT a good comparison so stop making it.

This. The "surgeon" doesn't seem to understand that the male equivalent of female mutilation is castration. Circumcision is not castration.

Um no. They are similar. While circumcision doesn’t remove sexual pleasure, by removing the foreskin the glands are now permanently exposed, therefore have a small degree is desensitization. Castration deals with sex hormones. No one is talking about removing a woman’s ovaries, so not sure why you bringing castration up.

Not surprisingly, boys don't give a damn about a procedure they don't remember having. They sure are mad if they need it later in life, though.

Islam is the second-most common religion in the world. You can't just blow it off as a rare minority.

I gladly had all three of my boys circumcized when they were born and, honestly, they are quite happy not to have to undergo the procedure at an age when they would have had a painful recovery.

I'd also like to add that circumcized men are far less likely to contract STDs including HIV.

Wouldn't it just be easier for men to be more selective in their sexual partners?

What does this even mean?! Can you tell a person's STD status by looking at them? How should a man select a sexual partner? By the clothes they wear? Their hairstyle? The church they attend?

At least women can know that a circumcised man is less likely to have an STD (though still not definitive).

I do not recommend YouTube as a source of accurate medical information.
