Apply and see.
Often huge draws from waitlist too.
Not bad to get first year classes done at UMW of JMU where classes are smaller, then transfer.
Expecting if your kid is socially independent and will join clubs.
If someone transfers from solid schools like UMW or JMU, why not transfer to something better like UVA or W&M? Sorry, but VT for anything non Tech seems pretty lateral….
Who said non tech? Intro chem and bio classes will be smaller at JMU and Mary Washington. But some kids want a bigger range of students and interesting research labs. If you have a flexible enough personality, there’s advantage to both. Not suggesting this for history majors.

Where’s the VT bashing? VT is a fine school. So are other second tier VA in states.
VT is not second tier
Anonymous wrote:Two kids got in to Tech. Both had a 4.2 weighted. SAT of 1090 and 1320. The 1090 kid was waitlisted but eventually got in. This was for 2021. 1320 kid got in to engineering.

Anonymous wrote:Anyone know why this is happening? Kids get into UVA but not VT all while the acceptance rate for UVA is 21% and VT still claims 45-50%. If those stats are true VT is intentionally dumping higher achievers. Just curious why.

Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:VT has become incredibly competitive. It received a school record 45,214 first-year applications for fall 2022 admission -- an increase of 7 percent over the previous year's record of 42,084 applicants.
The average high school GPA of the Class of 2026 (this year's freshmen) was 4.19 -- a 0.09 increase from last year’s freshman class.
[Both excerpts from articles easily found online]
Personally, I think the admission rate range anywhere from 56% to 68% found online (depending on the source) seems rather high. I wouldn't be surprised if it's lower than 50% now.
Just stop.

There’s no consistency on how they do things. This is what is aggravating Virginia residents. DC 4.0 and 1360 not in. Friend 4.5 and 1300. Not in.

1. Did you and your child's other parent go to college?
2. Is your child an URM?
Those two things will matter a lot.
omg no LOL

Anonymous wrote:The amount of misinformation on this is just ...wow. GPA is not that relevant anymore. For instance. My daughter had a old school teacher that only gave As to two or three kids a semester. And the class after the teacher pretty much give everyone a A. Universities are not unaware of this. Now they give a really good look at class rigor. If your child is taking physics in 11th grade it makes a difference. Coming from a NOVA high school is not a good thing. They take kids from all over the state. A normal kid from NOVA has no chance. But the same grades and course load from Wise County is a easy in. Unfortunately Universities just are not interested in rich kids at this time. If they can get a kid that is from a different background they will drop kick a rich kid in a minute.
