Subject: Why are cruises trashy?
I love cruising on Royal Caribbean, NCL or Celebrity. I have had a wonderful time, met friends, my children had a great time. We love the activities and we all have limited diets and running around trying to find food our whole vacation would kill all fun. It is easier on a cruise and that is the main reason we go. Also, we have no family so the child care is amazing and allows us to have couple time on vacation. Lastly, some of the cruise ships are amazingly specialized. I went on a RCL cruise with an ice skating rink and ice shows that are better than stars on ice. I love to skate and am obsessed with figure skating. I also love water parks and there was one on board too.

What on earth are you talking about? I just checked a week long Caribbean cruise on NCL in March 2023. $2600 base price for a couple. Maybe $4k including some extras and airfare.

My Dad thinks cruises are for the masses and only takes Windstar, Crystal, or private yachts like the one he took to the Galapagos with only 8 couples aboard, a world-renown chef, and a personal assistant per couple.

I got a Norwegian Cruise Line catalog in the mail by mistake. I was shocked to learn a cruise is $30,000. Hardly cheap and I doubt it's tacky or "trashy" at that price.

Cruise ships are trashy because they are just huge dirtbags with terrible impact on the environment. Cruising companies could invest in hydrogene drives, but the don't. They could pay the staff better, but they don't. They don't even pay taxes.

I think you’re confusing people wanting to go on an adventure vs relax without feeling like cattle. Those are two different trips.
The old money people I know don’t even do “adventure vacations” except maybe in college/early 20’s. They want to be surrounded by people like them and good help and that’s all.

It is true- very few of us on vacation are truly interested in any kind of “authentic” interaction with the locals beyond surface niceties. It takes a special kind of blind entitlement to not see how entirely transactional and false these interactions are. Just smile, tip and keep it moving.

ICYMI: cruise ships have a long history of employing lgbtq staff—often fleeing a home country (and families) that persecute/toss them out. It’s a thing. Google it.
There are white servers on Disney cruises. We met young white servers from Scotland and England as well as other European countries.
A server from Thailand told us she earns more in a week than she would in two months at home. She supports her family by working a 6 month contract then going home for 4-6 months.
