I read a quote somewhere that the best pizza in NYC is the place on the corner of your block. (In NJ and LI insert “the place in the center of town”). This is so true. I’ve had some decent pizza in the DC area but I so miss just being able to grab a reliably good slice or pick up a reliably good pie on my way home, instead of having to traipse all over to find a halfway decent pizza.

Nothing comes close to NJ Pizza but it's a decent substitute.

Wow, had forgotten this one. It is pretty good.

What is NJ pizza? I’m still haunted by a stripmall NJ pizza I had in the late 80s - probably in Summit or Westfield area? Spinach pizza.

Agreed. I also like pupatella and 2 Amy’s but Andy’s stands out. The ingredients just taste extremely fresh. I also appreciate that the pie is sizable and can feed a family, whereas some of these others are more personal sized.

DC - 2 Amys
MD - Inferno Pizzeria (Margherita) and Emma Rossi (Veedone)

Thankfully Inferno is 5 mins down the road and Emma Rossi periodically goes to the wineries. But hands down my favorite pizza is Emma Rossi's Verdone (pesto, mozza, balsamic glaze, etc).

NY Style - still haven't found a place better than Mama Lucia.

I live near 2 Amys for years. Pizza is awful and the staff is awful.

I've only eaten there a few times, but each time the crust has been great with lots of flavor. And with Neapolitan pizza, it's all about the crust.

Same here! Though I do like the fire and smoke at Matchbox Pizza. Shame that their crust is so thin nowadays.

The prices at Matchbox are stupid expensive.

We make our own fire and smoke at home, with a proper crust. The one at Matchbox has a crust that's like a cracker.

The recipe we use is:
chipotle in adobe paste on the base (just process a can)
roasted garlic paste (only a little)
tomato sauce (homemade)
fennel seeds (my own touch)
top with smoked Gouda and thin strips of roasted red pepper

Sprinkle finely sliced basil leaves over the pizza as soon as it comes out of the oven.

We leave off the onions but you can add finely diced red onions if you wish.

I don’t get the 2 Amy’s hype either. Also, it is very hard to bypass cactus cantina!

Where is Italian store? Could not find on Google.

Two locations in Arlignton. One at Spout Run and one in Westover.

Skip the Italian Store. Pupatella is better.

This is such a dumb comment. Pupatella is Neapolitan pizza, like 2 Amys. Italian Store is like a traditional NY/NJ pie. They are completely different things. If you prefer Neapolitan, that's fine, but that doesn't mean it's better.

People from NY/NJ would probably disagree that the soggy, greasy slices there are “traditional,” but hey, call me dumb.

So snobby. It’s like, you are a casual pizza place, not Daniel in NYC.
