I don't base my opinion of the Republican Party on random photos or stereotypes. I base it on the leaders of the party - Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, Kevin McCarthy, Ron DeSantis, and Greg Abbott, to name a few.

If Larry Hogan typified the Republican Party, I'd be fine with them - I voted for him, twice. Heck, if Liz Cheney exemplified the GOP, that would be OK. I wouldn't vote for her, but she'd be an honorable opponent. But Liz Cheney has been all but drummed out of the GOP for failing to toe the line. It's less a party these days than a cult of personality, verging on an actual cult.

But please, tell me which Democrats are crazier than Trump? And I'm not talking about policy disagreements, which area dime a dozen - I mean pushing ideas that will actually damage democracy.

We don't believe that welfare is good for people but we do believe it should only be provided when necessary, and it shouldn't be necessary forever for people who are not disabled. We believe in legal and safe abortion but not after 4 or so months. At that point, science can probably safe that child if it is born premature so it should be protected under the constitution.

We believe that with all its faults and problems, the United States is still the best country in the world with the most opportunity, the most freedom, and the most stable form of government. And yeah, we put out our flags.

My family has military but not a single cop in it but I still think most cops are on the right side of justice most of the time.

I think gay people should be able to marry, divorce, adopt etc. But I don't think people get to pick their gender. A lady can have her boobs removed and take steroids but she will never get testicular cancer and she might get ovarian cancer so as far as I can tell, biology has decided she is a girl. But I don't care if she wants to dress like he. Not my business or my bedroom.

You probably assume people like us are Democrats and that is why you cannot fathom that the election was so close.


question about this: what metrics are you using to say America is the best country? By population. wealth, health, and other measures we are so low. I’m just curious about this statement because I never understood how anyone came to this conclusion.

I am extremely liberal and feel this way. Also fully vaxxed and will vax my kids immediately upon availability of shots.


Another fully vaxxed very liberal person whose pediatrician told me the same bolded info. He said as it is now, for young kids, the vaccine offers minimal benefit to natural immunity. But there are still reasons to get it, like for community health.

It may not be the party you prefer to identify with. But the leader of the Republican Party, and its most prominent members, are xenophobic, anti-science fearmongers who seek to sow division for political profit, and who *actively* seek to subvert democracy to remain in power. You can say *you* don't believe any of those things, and maybe you're telling the truth. I'm sure you are. But it doesn't really matter. If you continue to support elected officials who do, who cares what you tell your husband at the dinner table?

In addition to that, the Republican Party traffics in misinformation and outright lies. The big lie, sure, that's the most egregious example, and the most potentially harmful. But they are happy to lie on policy matters, too. Just in the last few days, Mitch McConnell said that the Republicans won't raise the debt ceiling in order to allow Democrats to pay for their policy agenda. Mitch knows this is a lie, of course - the debt ceiling refers to money already spent and debts already incurred (lots of which was in connection with the recent tax cuts), not future spending. But he doesn't care.

That *is* the Republican party of today, whether you like it or not. If you support it, it says a lot about you.

It's people like you why I vote for the Republicans. My entire raison d'etre for voting for the Republicans is to keep the Democrats under control. Because we see what happens when they run amok and unchecked.


And you are why my Republican family in Texas voted Democrat. You don’t understand conservative views, you don’t understand the true history of our party. You are voting a party but it’s not a Republican Party. You don’t understand the basic tenets of conservatives.

My H is a cop and most cops will not report a coworker for breaking the law because they will not get backup in the future. That is what the thin blue line means.

My family is mostly Republican but would never vote for Trump or the current psychotic GOP. “Because we have some self respect”… is what my Texas g-ma said

They also know tax breaks are welfare and the $ that goes to farmers is welfare too. What you actually mean is that “certain” people should not get welfare.

We also believe and educated community … Republicans began the public school system. See if you were educated you would know that.

Teacher, always in a mask, reinforcing mask mandates for kids
Got vaccinated ASAP and so did the rest of the family, including my 12 yo
No lawn signs
Smile and quietly don’t say anything when you talk about Trump still at the side of the kids baseball game.
2nd generation immigrant
Not religious

I voted for Trump 3 times. Primary and two elections. I didn’t think he was a good choice this last time but he was better than Biden/Harris.

I'm not going to take all of this on because I don't have time now, but let's start with#1. There is no "right" to be in the military. People are disqualified all the time for multiple reasons, including physical and mental health reasons. The cohesion of the unit as it prepares to be a fighting force is, or should be, the number one priority. The ban on transgenders in the military makes sense for a multitude of reasons, as it arguably harms that unit cohesion.


that’s the exact reason they did not let women in the military.

Yes it’s a right to be in the military if you qualify and trans people do.

DH is former military, Catholic - regularly attends mass and all the holy days, drives a truck, plays golf and loves military/war movies, documentaries, and history. He views himself as conservative but that is relative to the views in this area. I am guessing in South Carolina, he'd be seen as liberal. He's voted Dem for the last 4 general election cycles and most local and state elections as well.

So based on everything you described why do you vote Republican? I can understand if it were the old Republican Party. But this current mess? I’m not super happy with the Democratic Party either but why do all these sensible conservatives on this thread talk about the extremism on the left without acknowledging it on the right? I’m actually from a country that at one point had a dictatorship. I find the Trump era rhetoric much scarier than CRT and wokeness.
