OP here - part of why I want to expand my student's search beyond VA is b/c UVA and W&M are so tough to get into. No other VA schools really appeal to my kid so want to make sure there's a good back-up plan that includes some good out of state options. Ivies, Notre Dame, Carnegie Mellon, WashU prob out of reach unless said kid just nails the SAT and/or cures cancer later this school year, but lots of good options at the tiers below that.

Again, thanks for good suggestions. And to the PP, I don't think this thread is useless at all. Appreciate the ideas. Some of these schools were not on the radar at all.

Not with 1300 SATs.

Hasn't even taken the SAT yet.

OP estimated 1300's based on PSAT.

Not uncommon to go from 1390 to 1500 SAT with some tutoring.

Will need higher SAT 1450 minimum, preferably 1500

No, UVA isn't that big on SAT. Also, W&M has a great business school too. Both though you have to apply once you're in the school and there's no guarantee.

Really, just went through the last cycle, DC's friends with low 1400s didn't get in. Maybe that was just a unique year given the test optional.

Agree on the SAT. Also you don’t apply to McIntire until your sophomore year at UVA. There is no direct admission into the Comm school as a high schooler

Of course you can’t get into comm school directly but I would be strategizing with APs, language requirement, etc so if you got into Uva, you’d be a shoo in and wouldn’t be stressing about getting a B in Sanskrit 2020 as a first year or whatever.

You can always try to directly transfer in from another school. people who did it, they got serious about school once in college, and realized comm school was a great path to a business career.

DCUM looks down on it, but what about Salisbury? They have a good business school and self-contained lovely campus. It might be worth visiting.

God I hate these posts. Invariably they result in stupid responses.

1. You don't get into McIntire as a first year.

2. A student with these stats has zero chance of getting into Notre Dame.

3. OP said NO SOUTH. Miami is about as south as you can get.

Etc.
