As a 33 year old with 2 kids and an income of $435 I would say no if you are planning to have a nanny and are going to be shelling out for an expensive preschool. The nanny, the classes, the childbirth costs (just hope your wife doesn't have complications and has generous mat leave), the preschool tuition... Save your $$

I have 3 kids. I’m well aware how much college costs. We plan to pay for college and grad school.

You should travel with your wife. I would be so bummed if my DH only traveled to a DE in law home yet wanted to blow 100k on a Range Rover.

DH has a Range Rover and I could not care less about the car.

I think Range Rovers are SO UNATTRACTIVE. They are so bulky and look very 2004 as well.

We live in NW DC. There are so many wealthy, WASP'y families with this vehicle; usually the frat-bro dad is driving it around.

These folks are not going into rural VA to go muddin' in the LX570. I don't get it. At all. I feel like it's a WASP cultural signifier from the late 90s/early 00s and these people never moved on.

WASPy types drive it and then the WASP desperados who are sooooo desperate to fit in with them or pretend to be them

OP in your place I'd lease something super fun and wait until the kid is born. Agree that RR is too unreliable to be worth the money (and yes, you do have the money), and LX570 is simply unattractive. In 2-3 model years' time you could have been tooling around in something sporty and celebrating the end of your kidfree stage, and then something that you like better may (/likely will) be available for that money.

Also worth noting that your wife who is not a car person may have much stronger opinions about cars when it's the thing she has to configure car seats in, get kids easily in and out of, etc.

I just don't see the benefits of buying your "now we have kids" car prematurely.

I've had my RR for 3 years with no repairs. My Acura RDX had more.

Not trying to turn this into a deep-dive on the cars themselves as everyone likes what they like, but:

EVs are out because we live in a rowhouse in DC sans private spot so no place to charge it.

I like the higher seating position of the full-size SUVs. The interior and drive on the Range Rover are great. You get in and close the door and feel like a million bucks. The LX is longer in the tooth but still very nice on the inside and unbelievably capable and reliable. Just not a fan of the Telluride or Palisade.

I would wait to have the kid(s) first. You don’t know if you will need fertility help. You don’t know if your wife won’t want to go back to work. Kids are expensive. You may want to move to a different neighborhood. I would not splurge on the car first.

DH is a car person and has a Range Rover and a Porsche. He didn’t get the Porsche until kid 2 was 2yo.

DH has a range rover and I hate it! It is terribly unreliable and worse, the service is horrible. Like we went months without a loaner when we needed it. And it takes forever to get parts. Lexus is way better, but at your income, I think you should buy a used one.

Do you have any idea what a kid is going to do to your $100k car?

They're going to puke in it.
They're going to leave cheerios all over it.
They're going to step on the seats and maybe the ceiling.
Their car seat will leave indentations in the leather.

If you were super rich and there was no material difference between a $20k car and a $100k car, then sure - get one. But for you it sounds like it's a /thing/. Don't. Because your future life won't treat it with the respect you want. OR you'll be one of those parents who prioritizes their objects over their kids.

Drive a shit car. Save for something awesome when they're all old enough to not ruin it.
