Stupid, outdated policy in my opinion. A skilled and talented player does not want to be in lower bands. Boring and no challenge!! Nothing to learn. Why wouldn’t a school want to encourage a student to play an instrument? Must they find an ensemble outside of school to grow and develop them as musicians…..guess so! School music programs need to be adjusted with inclusion in mind. Music for all… not just marching band members.

To the OP, call Mr. Fisher (or have your child ask him) about it, or call Mrs. Jacoby at the high school. They will tell you the drill there.

It is a school by school thing outside the advanced band. Herndon requires the kids in the 2nd band to march as well. Most do, but not all.

Fairfax County Public Schools mandates that marching band is required for Symphonic Band students only. It is optional (but encouraged) for Wind Ensemble and Concert Band students.

That is not how it works at LBSS. It's mandatory for the top 3 bands, not the one bottom band.

They had camp starting on August 2nd for some people, August 4th or 5th for newbies (IIRC) and August 9 for everyone else. It was every day, all day until school started. Then T/Th afternoons. All home football games and up to three weekend competitions depending on COVID restrictions. Seems like a lot to me, unless you love band. And there's usually some sort of optional (but encouraged) band camp in June. I hope you don't like summer.

Blurgh. I mean, go for it kid!!!
