We unintentionally create capsule wardrobes were a lot mixes and matches so my son has about 7 pairs of shorts or pants, 7 shirts, 3-4 sweaters, 2-3 sweatshirts, and 3-5 pairs of pjs per season.

My 10yo has too many, but that is because he gets a lot of hand me downs from 12yo bro...

Realistically he wears regularly: 5 shorts, 1 jeans, 2 athletic pants, 10 tshirts, 2 Hoodies, 2 PJ pants

Basically the above is washed and worn over and over again, along with socks/underwear of course. As stuff gets outgrown or stained, it gets replaced with a new favorite

He has other stuff like dressy clothes, sports jerseys etc that aren’t often worn. Also some old clothes we keep around for extra play clothes, messy projects etc.

I moved last year and was overwhelmed by the number of t-shirts my 10yo has, so I counted: 75. Granted a lot of them were from summer camps or events, and he's skinny so even size 5 still sort of fits. And lots of hand-me-downs.

And that's just at my house. His dad has a whole other dresser full.

Seems like he never has enough pants, though. Camps should give pants instead of shirts.

Eight outfits for spring/summer and eight outfits for fall/winter. One more dressy for a nice restaurant or religious holiday or something. Then seven outfits to "play" in. Generally 3/4 are mix and match to some degree. Two pairs of sneakers, one pair of flip flops, one pair of dress shoes.

1 drawer each of shorts, tshirts, pants, pajamas. I don't know how many that is, maybe in the 10 to 20 range? Whatever fits in the drawer is fine with me.

Hanging in the closet are school uniform (polo shirts, button ups, pants), jackets, a few other non uniform button ups, and sweaters. Again, I have no idea how many, it's just whatever fits in the closet that we have hangers for.

It's only if the drawer or closet are overflowing that I start to take notice and cull.

Same. Polo, Lacoste and Vineyard Vines styles for boys don't really change year to year so when they are on major sale, I stock up. Now that DS is a 3rd grader, he is into Under Armour and Nike too for day to day wear. Again, I stock up when things are on sale and buy for a couple of years ahead. Same with something like a Patagonia jacket.

5 yo.

A dozen or so each of tees (short and long sleeved), shorts, pants, undies, socks, and PJs. Enough for a week + extras to keep at school, in car, etc.

One “nicer” outfit + a few polos.

One pair each of sneakers, sandals, Crocs, and rain boots.

A couple hoodies, a 3-in-1, a rain jacket, + rain and snow gear.

A couple sets of swim trunks + rash guards.

Too many hats and mittens to count.

OMG my 10 yo has more underwear and socks than you can find at Target. His drawers are full of tshirts from his older brother, sports, you name it. I counted 15 pairs of shorts at one point this summer (thank you , Bethesda Lacrosse.)

When I get fed up with them all, I cull. Anything stained, fraying or see through gets tossed. I confiscate the shirts that annoy me, too!
