I passed out about a month ago in the living room. Dh said our lab was going between licking my face and barking like a maniac to get dh's attention upstairs. He said he had never heard him bark like that which is why he came down to investigate.

My dog catches on immediately when I'm pretending, and makes it clear she thinks I'm being ridiculous. However, when I'm truly sick or sad she is very attentive and caring (stays near me, gentle kisses). Dogs are the best.

Honestly my cat is a lot more empathetic than my dog. I had surgery and she got inside the bed and sat on my chest for 3 days (at home recovering) and barely left me. Dog doesn't give a hoot unless it is affecting his food / play time.

I slipped and fell on ice last winter in someone's unshoveled driveway, hit my head and broke a couple of bones. I was in so much pain I couldn't get up for about 10-15 minutes and just lay there trying to figure out what happened and what to do. My dog just basically shrugged and kept on sniffing the ground.

That would be my dog as well. He’s old and deaf too, so he’ll probably not even discover me until he gets hungry. It will be open season on the kitchen counter.

My pre-teen DD was caretaker and dog walker of a neighbor’s sweet Labrador. The dog would be so excited to go on a walk w/ DD that their routine was always leash up and jog!

DD had fallen during soccer and injured her ribs and hip - was walking tenuously. That day, the dog would NOT run and actually sat down while DD got the leash on. Truly the dog had to be coaxed outside and then they did a very slow, unusually short walk that amazed DD-she was convinced that the dog understood that she was injured.
