This might be true is if you had SATs under 1300, but a GPA of 4.4. Then you'd have slightly better odds at UVA than WM (at least from my HS Naviance report). But neither would be a safety for you.

At W&M, the middle bar of SATs 1300-1490, middle ACT 30-34. That means a full quarter of the students are in the 99.9%ile for standardized tests. It may not be Harvard, but most of us need a safety.

I agree with you, but 1490 is the 97th percentile.

Not according to this chart: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/pdf/understanding-sat-scores.pdf

The SAT user is the more important number, so 98th.
Okay, so a quarter are above that in 2020 scores. And similar for past decade. Same point.

I have one kid who got into WM and went elsewhere. But applied to SLACs. Kid 2 is doing it now. Their safeties included:

Pitt— surprisingly attractive to both my kids who wanted small schools
Wooster
St. Olaf
Lawrence
American (but, kid was super focused on IR)

Other kids I know looking at WM used Dickinson, Denison, Clark, Emerson and Susquehanna as safeties.

All these schools could give you enough merit aid to match WM price.

Oberlin, Kenyon and Macalester are often used matches for these kids. You could get good aid from them too.

For kids who applied in state only, CNU and UMW are the main safeties.

You're not a Virginia resident.

I'm a Virginia resident, and completely agree with this posted...there are much better schools in VA as backups to W&M that I would put in place before UWM.

Name them.

I am, and I would not want my kid who just missed W&M to go to UMW.

Yes it was originally the junior college for W&M.

I would also consider St John’s in Annapolis.
