OP must be jealous that the Jeep looks better topless than herself!

This. Go find something better to do than envy your husband his pleasure in harmless masculine activity.

Some people do this with boats, some with golf, some with hardscaping, some with cameras. Give it a rest, for chrissakes.

This. I wish I still had mine. The fact that I still have the second and third is some comfort.

Agree with other posters - if you can afford it, let him be. If you need another car and can't swing both cars, then it should be replaced with something more practical.

My DH has 3 cars, though he is fixing one meant for my 15yo next year. It's his hobby, makes him happy and doesn't negatively impact me (we have a big garage).

+1

I would have phrased it more diplomatically, but this is a labor of love on a car with significant sentimental value, fun value, and also happens to retain significant market value when the time comes to sell. Let the man wrench on his Jeep in peace.

The costs are sunk.
If it keeps him out of trouble, why not?

I would have difficulty countenancing repairing such a polluting, unsafe vehicle, but if he's very emotionally attached to it, and would be wasting his time on stupid things no matter what, then why not this?

He's always managing to find trouble. Someone who commented earlier about chasing skirts is not far off. I love him but want him to grow up.

It sounds as though you're looking at the Jeep as a symbol, but to an outsider it just looks like a hobby.

Sometimes a Jeep is just a Jeep

Would you feel differently if there was a monthly budget for this hobby and you could plan for it?

Anonymous wrote:It is true that sounds like a hobby or labor of love, but the fact that you only mentioned one second car (Subaru with 300k) sounds like you might be tight on money. Is money an issue? Is the fact that he is putting money into the Jeep keeping you from getting another car to replace or supplement the Subaru?

This. Does he think that the Jeep will ever be something other than a hobby?

My husband spends a ton of money on physics textbooks because he loves physics. It has nothing to do with his career, and I don't mind, because he's doing fine professionally. But if he were spending that kind of money *instead of* getting closer to retirement savings or a professional certification that he needed for work, I'd be mad.

Your husband's Jeep looks like transportation, but it isn't transportation, at least in practical terms. So if you need transportation, you need to make it clear that Hobby Jeep is fine, but your family also needs reliable transportation.
