I lived in Africa as a teenager, and have lived in Africa with my own kids. I think this would likely be an amazing experience for your daughter, but would ask lots of questions first. The main things I’d want to know were whether they were going to stay in Banjul or travel outside the city (concerns re: potential for vehicular accidents and access to medical care), where your DD’s friend’s family accesses medical care if they get sick while they’re there, and what kinds of things the kids would be doing on a day to day basis (supervised by whom). I would *not* be worried about sex tourism, war, or landmines along the Senegalese border.

If I trusted the family, and there were no major travel warnings against traveling in the area, I would happily send my kids. Sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Nope. There is no good reason to go there. I have a friend who taught there and she says she never felt safe. Plus, lack of even adequate healthcare would be a no for me.

It's the safest and best way to go if she's going with the family of her friend. They'll take care of her. She's not going to get scammed at the airport, end up in an unsafe hotel, end up in a bad neighborhood, etc.

I have a similar opportunity next year to another country nearby. A friend of mine from there is going back to visit and invited me along. I'll go in a heartbeat -- the best way to see a country and you're with people who will take care of you and show you around.

I don’t care for Gambia and would not let her.
