On the other hand, she gave her alternate a chance to compete. She probably would have cost them the gold anyway had she continued to compete. Perhaps even a medal at all. Better to get out of the way than contribute to the problem.

The gymnastics she is doing is so dangerous. Her head has to be 100% or she could break her neck. She is not 16 but 24 and she knows what she is doing.

Yeah, the Nassar stuff is sick and it happened to pretty much all of them. So not only are they putting their physical bodies on the line, but they were set up to be sexually assaulted. Just sickening stuff.

None of those women owe any of us a darn thing.

She's struggled with injuries this year, that level of gymnastics is extremely hard on your body and almost all the elite athletes battle injuries as a result.

But the reality is also that while a prominent and well publicized one, the Olympics are just another competition and you don't risk permanent injury for a single competition.

It's totally possible that the medical issues are a combination of both mental/physical factors. She looked off in qualifications and then in team final pulled out of her vault in both the warmup and competition (i.e., the planned 2.5 twists became 1.5). If something doesn't feel right and you lose your confidence to perform a skill, that can be pretty dangerous considering how risky these skills are. Anyway, whatever it is, I hope she is ok! Hats off to the rest of the team for stepping up, I hope they feel proud even though everyone was expecting gold. They were all under such pressure, but Simone most of all.

I can also see that if she is mentality not there or in her head her risk of injury is that much greater.

Regardless of what the medical issue is, I feel so bad that these women had so much hype going into the Olympics. It's too much for most people. Ms. Biles was constantly called the "Greatest Of All Time" and I get how that's a blessing, but it also must be a curse. Sports are supposed to be enjoyable activities at some level.

I actually respect her for pulling out and recognizing she can’t go any further, whether it is for mental issues or physical (both of them are medical). It must take a lot of guts to say you’ve gone far enough when you have the whole world watching you.

The NY Post is hardly the most reliable source. The NY Times and news agencies are calling it a medical issue.

On the NBC livestream this morning, the commentators said the original word from the coach or someone from US gymnastic was mental issue. Then later on in the stream, they said US gymnastic corrected it to medical issues.

Not the NY Post fault.

I guess mental could be medical issue. Hopefully she bounces back in the all-around and individual events.

Bills is a super elite athlete but I actually had a cousin compete in Olympic diving and you really have to put your wellbeing first. A lot of these sports come with some serious risks, my cousin had a serious back injury from a dive that landed wrong. The career is generally pretty short because of the high stress it puts on your body.

She's already contributed so much to the sport, no shame in putting her wellbeing first.
