I don’t see it as a problem for pets. I think people complaining about it on that basis are just looking for something to complain about.

However, as a klutz myself, I’d worry more about having it so close to the sidewalk. If a kid running, riding a bike, roller skating, etc., fell down, it looks like it could be an issue.

This isn’t fun, no one is good or even that terrible. Yawn.

Comes with the territory of choosing to live in a location with heavy foot traffic. I’m sure the neighbors hate the house so that was part of it.

Part of the problem is that his neighborhood does not have the grass strip between the sidewalk and the street. They look like crappy sidewalks and his bushes are right about on top of them. If the mats and bushes were set back a few inches from the sidewalk, it wouldn’t be such an issue.

I prefer deer deterrents that are motion activated water sprayers. Keeps deer and dogs away. I see nothing wrong with using the mats on his property. His neighbors are nasty.

I have no problem with what he did. Some dog owners can be so inconsiderate

It’s fine — it’s his property. But I also think it’s fine for someone to post a warning about it both for dogs and children—it’s an unseen hazard and I can absolutely see my kids stepping on it accidentally, like if a bicycle or wheelchair was coming down the sidewalk and they stepped aside. I also think he planted his ugly bushes way too close to the sidewalk. They will be obstructing the sidewalk very soon.

I guess I also don’t see the problem with a dog peeing on an evergreen bush. It doesn’t hurt the bush. I don’t let my dog pee on flowers or fancy plantings but a bush or a tree that is right up against the sidewalk seems like fair game. I think of that area as sort of the penumbra of the sidewalk—if you are living in a dense urban or suburban environment you need to expect that there will be some incursions onto your property that abuts the sidewalk.

Nothing wrong with putting a scat mat in front of your pushes. He is correct that dogs or cats will avoid it. Regardless of whether dog urine killed his expensive yews, he is perfectly in the right. I feel bad for him that busybodies attacked him.
