Great that you noticed via pictures but what did your kid say?

Also there are counselors IN the cabins too. It isn't like the kids are Lord of the Flies once they had to the cabins.

I would be more pissed that you didn't hear back from the camp when you contacted them.

We had our younger kid in a camp that had big age ranges in groups and he overheard some really inappropriate stuff with the older kids. The kids were just being teens but had no concept of how much younger my child was and why it wasn't appropriate. There were adults and they seemed to be allowing it/no issues. I walked in on it and reminded them what's ok for a 13-15 year old is not ok for a 9 year old. It can only really work if there is adult supervision.

They can. But 12 yr olds can also be entering 9th grade, and 16 yr olds can be entering 10th.

I am a much more laissez-faire parent than most on this board, but this would make me pretty angry. I do not want to spend money (camps are not cheap!) for my 12 year old to be in a cabin 15-16 year olds as peers. The conversations 16 year olds have, particularly with no counselors around, are not things a 12 year old needs to be a part of. They’re in totally different stages.

Anyone whose been to camp knows shenanigans do happen — I don’t want my kid exposed to it with that much of an age and power/maturity dynamic at play.

You know that your son probably had the time of his life, right, OP? Hanging with the older boys? Let it go.

My 16-year-old son could be a counselor for a 12-year-old, but they're not peers and shouldn't be treated as such.

NP. Whatever you feel about BSA, that particular advice about the age difference is sensible. Also, I put my kid in cub scouts and they have (belatedly) put in tons of content on talking to your kids about sexual abuse and scenarios that you're required to go over together with your child. I thought it very well done.

I completely agree. I have a 16yr. old and an almost 13. And no, I would not put my younger one with a bunch of hormonal, dirty mouth 16 teenage boys.

+1 My sons are 13 and 16.

I would be pretty furious if this happened and my kid was put with older teens. Weird sh*t happens. We have heard some horrific stories in travel sleepaway sports trips where parents were not in rooms
