I think you were trying to be helpful, which is a nice thing on a thread with some predictably nasty posts, but Purdue is probably tougher to get into than Penn State, and there's not much difference between Indiana, Iowa, and Minnesota.

Yes, the kids has "a type" as do so many kids in the process. Some want schools in certain regions of the country, some want a certain of LAC and can be in any region of the country. Guessing neither of my kids will come to us with a similar list, but GL to OP's DC - bravo for getting a list - good, important step in this journey.

And do your homework the University of Florida is very hard to get into. Alabama and UF are not in the same stratosphere. Same with Georgia.

We have a counselor of course Fl and GA are reaches. I probably felt like you do before visiting some of these schools. Auburn, in particular, I thought was great.

Both are beyond better than Alabama and Auburn. Your counselor stinks.

UGA is impossible to get into without top stats. They didn't accept anyone OOS unless they had over a 4.2GPA.

Without stats there is no advice to give and this is just a collection of colleges. We can’t help if we just know you have a kid and he wants to go to college.

I went to OSU for grad school. It hits all your points except for the southern/warm thing.

For comparable schools, some of which might be a little less challenging, Alabama, Georgia, and Old Miss seem like they could be a good fit. Auburn too.

Some of the others… not sure. OSU is SO school spirit driven and while I’m sure that’s true at IU too, it’s not on the same level.

I will say… the bigger the school, the more the student needs to be fairly motivated. I went to a super small college and a gigantic grad school and think it would be quite hard to be a student at the big school without a decent level of support.

Looks good to me except the 2 schools in Alabama but I really dislike that state.

I think he would like TCU more than SMU.

My dc really wants Miami.

University of Alabama Birmingham is a good option.

Warm, mid-sized, great modern campus, fun city, sporty (just installed new sand beach volleyball courts), and really great for and medical field.

Yeah. “If you can’t say something nice…” comes to mind.

He might like University of Arkansas. The student body is academically like that of GMU. Nice weather. Because there are no professional sports teams in Arkansas, the UofA teams are worshipped. The area of UofA is home to Walmart which has had years of job growth for college graduates. Or head to Texas after graduation.
