Love that families with young children who haven't seen grandparents, cousins, or other family for 15 months are "selfish" for wanting rules that reasonably reflect risk. For instance, having more stringent rules for people who are flying versus those who are driving a state or two away. But no, the assumption is that this is a population who should just continue to sacrifice any semblance of a normal life for the benefit of everyone else.

So to be clear, DC's priorities:

Dine-in restaurants are more important than in-person school.
Drinking in bars is more important than visiting immediate family.
Adults with money are more important than children.
Commerce is more important than anything.

Agree. If we travel, we do it super cautiously. Drive, mask indoors, don’t do indoor dining, don’t spend time with unvaccinated adults indoors. I have zero compunction about telling my kids to keep quiet about our travel, and I usually have a hard time lying.

Travel restrictions without distinction between areas of low and high case rates are asinine. Again, masks, testing, and ventilation are the keys to preventing the spread (assuming vaccination is already a given or under 12 and unable to vaccinate).

Did DCPS not learn anything from the last 16 months?

Based on the fact that it is different based on vaccination status, I'd imagine that it will be extremely difficult to enforce for the over-12 kids. Since vaccines aren't mandatory and you aren't required to report vax status. Kids over 12 can just say they are vaxxed (as can teachers/staff).

Well, congratulations to you and your over 12 kids? For the many of us whose kids are too young to be vaccinated, this is a nightmare especially in combination with the lack of a virtual school option (I am fully in favor of eliminating virtual school, but you can't do that and then also enforce quarantines).

This demonstrates to me that DC still does not have a plan about how to really have a robust in-person school system in the fall (including likely excessive quarantining) and, of all things in the past 16 months, is the thing that will make me consider leaving the city.

I'm PP and don't have over-12 kids, either. Yeah, we are going to have to quarantine kids in the Fall. It's going to be a mess. I will personally hate it. Finances mean I can't leave the city now (because if you're like me, covering childcare during the pandemic completely depleted my savings).
