My mom and dad were very happily married for 52-years before my dad's death (just awful and crushing) and they both referred to us 3 kids as 'the loves of their life'....even though their marital love was very great. It used to make me smile.

Spouse.
There's a college girlfriend I get nostalgic about, but that has as more to do with remembering how fun it was to be young and in college as it does about her. Fact is, it would've turned out poorly if we'd stayed together.

Male. I've never loved anyone the way I loved my first serious girlfriend in college. We planned to marry, but our relationship was crushed mostly by distance and poverty. I won't be specific, but I can say that her life in the years after we broke up was pretty difficult and then she died unexpectedly - this was all unrelated to me, but I can't help feeling that things might have been different for her if we'd stayed together. It makes me pretty sad at times. I've been reasonably happily married to another woman for 31 years, 3 kids. But that first woman took something from my heart that has never come back.

My college gf. I was a late bloomer and graduated at 26. She was a few years out of college and 24. I loved her like crazy and still think about her at 40. Had to end it because her parents wanted her to be with someone in their class.
