My kids sit on the counter on either side of the sink. They are 4 & 5 and have always done it this way.

We have 2 folding step stools in our small apartment that make their way to whatever room they're needed in. They're immensely useful. My 2 year old knows to grab one and carry it to the bathroom if his 5yo sister isn't sharing the one she's using.

My children each have their own wing, with a private manservant to hold a basin into which they spit their toothpaste leavings. Doesn’t everyone?

I brush my kids teeth. So they rotate between sitting on the counter getting their teeth brushed and going potty one last time.

Is your 2 year old really brushing their own teeth and doing a good job at it?

Was about to recommend this myself. We have a similar one and it works well. It’s nice to be able to have it go flat when we don’t need it.

The Ikea ones (white with green grips) stack. I also think the folding steps are great and Walmart and Target have those.

Truth told, when my older kids were small we had one bathroom and one stool. We'd brush together and they'd take turns going up on the stool to rinse.

I send them to brush their teeth at different times. Quite frankly, my 2 yr old needs adult help to do it properly. And yours probably does too.

Stools are also used for hand washing. How do your kids do that themselves if they are too short to reach the faucet?

I think when they were little we were in a really old house with strangely low sinks and toilets so maybe we really just didn't need one.

Get a second stool. Sure you can teach them to share, but it really is okay to make your life easier and indulge them a bit from time to time.


Is there any way to modify your vanity to have a pull out stool?

I grew up with no sink - our only bathroom faucet was over the tub, and all four people in the family took turns. And yet, I somehow managed not only to get a Harvard PhD but also to realize that rubbing my privilege into others' faces was poor form. Yet, it's so tempting sometimes, such as right now, with "Never-Had-to-Share" Lady.

OP, we have two stools because the smaller kid needed a higher stool than what the older kid was already using. It's kind of a pain to keep both in the bathroom, but one sort of fits under the other when not in use. If you can find stackable stools, that would probably be ideal. Two stools are also handy in the kitchen when they both want to help with cooking and baking and I can set them up side by side.

One stool. Take turns. Seriously?

We just have 1 small folding stool. Mainly to help them reach to wash their hands. Now they use it to see the mirror or in other places around s the house. It’s definitely tippy and they’ve learned not to lean over and to stand straight on it.

We’ve gotten a lot of use out of it and my kids are 5 and 7.
