A great response would have been either "nah I won't fight him you YOU better watch your ass" and then smile and say just kidding.

Middle school is awful. Your son handled the exchange well. So many kids are testing how far they can push things (aka - how big of jerks they can be and get away with it). Even my sons good friends are basically mean to him. I am hoping it all levels out in high school.
