I'm turning 40 this year and I had the same question. We have a $400K HH income and only one kid.

The only thing stopping me is that we don't have a garage at our rowhouse and I think we are more interested in acquiring a 2nd home and renovating our current home.

I'm hoping by 45 I can buy the new Corvette. It's so awesome.

"luxury" is a broad term.

You can buy a $70k BMW and it will be a boatload of fun to drive while also depreciating like a rock and bleed money at the mechanic.

You can buy a $70k Corvette.

You can buy a $70k Lexus that will last forever, will depreciate slowly and be relatively inexpensive to maintain, though not quite as packed with cutting-edge tech as the others.

OP, can you be more specific about the kind of $70k vehicle you are considering?

They do care. If you drive a crappy cars, other kids will make fun of them at school.

Only terrible assholes would do this. And why would my kids care what terrible assholes think?

They will not. Come on. And I went to GDS, where there were a ton of rich kids. No one makes fun of other people’s cars, among other reasons it is too overt.

Got my first luxury car when I was 33. Your salary is healthy so a 70k car should not be a big burden. However, if this is going to be an ongoing thing, as it has been for me, I recommend the 2 month gross income rule: don't buy a car more expensive than that if you only keep it for 2-3 years.

We've had Audis as our family car since our kids were born. Even when they were toddlers and younger, they didn't trash it too much. The key is to get rubber mats in the back for the floor and also under the car seats, and clean up any messes the same day.
