People in the DMV seem to be very shallow and materialistic, so they probably ARE judging your car.

I'm not. I judge cars on cleanliness and safety. I think anyone spending more than say ... $50k on a car when they're not a race car driver is ridiculous and a total waste of money.

High-end Audi driver here: I doubt there is much judgment. A lot of "car people" have fond memories of the peppy little Hondas we used to drive, and I, for one, would view that particular choice as reflecting good judgment about cars from a performance perspective. It's better than seeing yet another Jeep Rubicon in the carpool line. lol Anyone judging you for this is not worth worrying about anyway.


So true. We have a Tesla Model X, which I love, but DH and I still get misty talking about our zippy manual transmissions from back in the day (a Honda Civic for me and a Saturn for him).

The bolded is really what it comes down to.

My car is 12 years old and my husband's is 14 years old. I don't care what you drive, but I did get my car repainted last year because it was looking a little rough and now it looks great. A good detailing every once in awhile also helps make an old car feel nicer.

Are you a millennial? I know someone with a higher HHI that also has that car. I really cannot understand why they don’t get something safer to drive there kids around in, but it’s their choice. I think it’s odd, but it’s their money. I know they can afford more, but don’t want to. Another family I know has it because it will fit in their tiny garage. You do you.

My 16 year old is learning to drive and I actually feel more comfortable with her in my older car that does NOT have all of the security/ safety features, because I know that it forces her to really learn to "drive" and to pay closer attention to what she's doing. The beeps and flashes can be a crutch, especially for new drivers, who need to really learn how to use the passing lane, for example.

Don't upgrade. My 2019 Honda sucks. I didn't make it up, Honda sent a letter to bring the car in for upgrade of some sort. It you are comfortable, and older cars people have drives, are comfortable keep it. It's more important to drive carefully and watch out for others than to upgrade for latest bells and "security". Than you for not buying new all the time even though you can afford it. "Live simply, so others can simply live".
You friend simply made a joke and/or conversation. Keep the loves and comfortable car. She is not even thinking about it anymore and neither should you.

I wouldn't judge you a bit, but I will say with your HHI, I would upgrade, just based on all the safety features that you might not have that a new car would. Not to upgrade to a luxury car, but my 19 honda has tons more than my 10 honda did.

This is planet earth. People will judge people for anything. Cheap car, old car, brand new car, nice car, no car - all will bring judgement. Why would you care? Don't run your life trying to avoid being judged because you will end up sad.

OK, I will judge you if you have money and drive an unreliable car that creates logistical problems like being late to lunch or not being able to do pick up. Waiver allowed if the unreliable car is really cool like a Citroen. If your unreliable car is a Nissan, get ready for a shovel full of judgement!

I have a 1999 -- it runs great, everything major already re-done. I couldn't care if others judge me. And, I know they do bc they make comments. But, I'' laughing all the way to the bank. We are rolling in the dough.

I have this car, too, PP and I love it! It's a little banged up from all the city driving, but it only has about 60,000 miles on it. I plan to drive it until it falls apart. (And if you saw it, OP, you would never guess our net worth. But... how do you think we accumulated the wealth? By not blowing money on things like new cars!)
