My kids (boys) also had to transition from a British school uniform (complete with tie/sweater vest and black dress shoes) to US style public school dress. It took a while from them to adjust. At first, they wouldn't even wear jeans, it had to be pants. Then, they would wear jeans but wouldn't wear athletic pants. Now, it's hard to get them out of athlete pants.

Mine is 11 and her friends wear a wide variety of clothes. My daughter wears exclusively athletic clothes, her choice, like some of her friends. So it’s a mix of shorts, tees, leggings and hoodies. Some friends wear jean shorts and many wear actual cloths, like from H & M, Target, Old Navy, etc. take your daughter shopping a buy a few things she likes. Have her wear dresses if she wants to. One of my daughters friends wears a lot of skirts. It’s her style.

My DD is about to turn 11. She’s currently wearing lots of jean shorts and soft Terry cloth type shorts, crop tops, boxy/square shaped especially, or alternatively it would be a long baggy t shirt. Wild Fable at Target is a brand she seems to like. She wears Nikes and wants to get some Vans slides. She attends a public school in Montgomery County.

Fellow Brit here. OP the kids dress very down, in comparison to what you're used to. It's not culturally something that happens here in the DC area (it does in Los Angeles though), any kind of "style" as you'd expect in the uk or other European country.
It's mostly practical but also to fit in rather than stand out.

My 11 yr old wears the Nike dry tempo shorts and t shirts a lot or jean shorts and t shirts. But she also goes to a very small private school where there are only a handful of girls in her grade..fashion isn’t a topic of interest at the moment. I suspect this will change once we move to public middle school

I guarantee what she would buy now and like as a 5th grader will be sneered at within a few weeks of middle school, so I wouldn’t invest much. My 7th grader never wears leggings to school, it’s mostly wider leg jeans with small mini shirts. Shorts are ok, and actually skirts are in (tennis style, plaid or skater) but never dresses. Skinny jeans will get you a gasp of horror.
Tillys has a kid section that sells the same style clothes as the adult section, hollister also sells XXS online. Forever 21 kids also has some kids styles that look more teen than kid
