If you're standing at the curb, all good drivers MUST think you want to cross. That's the law. They legally need to give way to pedestrians. Plus they probably don't want to kill someone, if you just step out in front (even if you're on your phone).

You need to wait to the side, in front of the tree but not on the curb. Wave to the driver and step forward and around to the actual stop. Explain to the driver that the tree blocks your view.

Hold out a can and shake it, like you’re looking for donations. Either people won’t stop or you’ll make money.

Agree head in book is clear sign you are not trying to cross the street. Looking at Cell phone, won’t work.

I think when I do this people think I'm looking for traffic.

There's no way for me to see the bus coming and not see the traffic. Buses blow past often, and so I'm not willing to stand so that I can't see the bus often, because it adds 20 - 30 minutes to my commute.

Sit in a beach chair then as a PP suggested. Leave the chair at the stop. You could keep the laminated picket sign there too.

Can't you just go to the other side of the tree, and stand away from the curb on the sidewalk? That way you can see when the bus is coming and get to the curb in time for it to see you and stop.

If not then stand on the curb, but don't face the street head on, stand facing the direction of oncoming traffic and make sure you don't make eye contact with any drivers lol - let your gaze go beyond all the immediate cars.

Eventually it works. I mean, obviously since it's a two lane road and I'm not still waiting there, eventually the traffic moves on. Often times, I can see the bus trapped behind the line of people passing me and eventually that bus gets to me.

But it just takes people some time to process. And the people behind don't seem to understand what's going on, because you'd think that they'd notice that I didn't cross for the three people in front of them and keep going.

It’s so extra. But so necessary. Crazy thing is it would work.

Maybe just shake your head and point back down the street, the direction the bus will be coming from? If someone did that to me, I would get the hint that they were waiting for a ride.
