This. Don't face the curb. Face the direction that the bus will be coming from so that it is obvious you are looking for or waiting for something.
I think when I do this people think I'm looking for traffic.
There's no way for me to see the bus coming and not see the traffic. Buses blow past often, and so I'm not willing to stand so that I can't see the bus often, because it adds 20 - 30 minutes to my commute.
