DD still wear tankini in MS. They were in one piece until 9 or 10. They actually like the bathing suits with shorts bottoms.

I'm like you, OP, and also agree with the PPs that there is a difference between 2-piece bathing suits in general (e,g,, tankinis, rash guards with bottoms) and bikinis. I don't like seeing bikinis or bare midriffs on anyone under, say 15-16. Very young need the sun protection provided by other styles.

I"m like you OP. I have 2 young adult DD's and a young one. I chose to buy tankinis for my girls when they were little (loved the Lands End ones!). When they got to be about your dd's age, they wanted bikinis-I'm not crazy about them, but together we would choose ones with more rather than less coverage. My little dd wears a rashguard and bottoms (we live in Fl now so need rashguards).
As adults now my DD's still prefer bikinis with more coverage.

Opinions?
My child has alwsys worn two-piece suits and none of them was anything close to 'sexualizing'. Well, if you're Amish, you can have your child swim un a full-length dress and a bonnet, otherwise.

Come off it. All bathing suits cover non existent breasts. Having a child bathing suit cut like an adult string bikini is what's sexualizing. Same reason I wouldn't let my seven year old wear red nail polish or lipstick or high heels. It's sexualizing.
Eh... no. All bathing suits do not cover non-exists t breasts. Lilly Pulitzer didn’t even make bikini tops for little girls, just the bikini bottoms. No little girls in my town growing up wore tops when it was boiling hot anymore than the boys did.
And whose talking about an adult string bikini anyway?! Or lipstick or heels?! We’re talking about a little girl with a bare midriff in the summer to swim!

+1. I was raised in South Africa and didn’t wear a bathing suit top until I had breast buds. My brothers and I all swam in trunks as did all of my little girlfriends. My DD, 2.5, swims in just bottoms

I think it’s more about the style of the two piece then the two piece itself. I’d, personally, be fine with my 10 year old wearing an athletic style two piece. Not so much a string bikini. There are some cute midkini styles, too, if you want to compromise.

I only have boys, and i usually insist on rash guards because they are pasty pale kids, so I'd probably have a girl in a rashguard and bikini bottom or boy shorts until they asked for something else.

By making a big deal about her NOT wearing a two piece, you are really the only one who made it sexual.
I think making this a thing is teaching her that there is something wrong with her body. Most two pieces for kids are not anymore “mature” than a one piece
