This what I do with my first grader/rising second grader, but I think it could work for a Ker too. We read graphic novels (or really any book with word bubbles from a character -- maybe Gerald and Piggie?) and we each play a character. We do silly voices and really read with feeling. This is how I get him to read with me, otherwise he is really resistant to practicing reading. I think it's less intimidating to read just one character and have it be more of a conversation.

is she in MCPS? Our K teacher said our kid will still have access to Benchmark Universe on his chromebook this summer and knows how to access it.

It's absolutely not a bad idea to keep practicing reading over the summer. Summer should be fun, but summer brain drain is real and a kid that's already behind could get very rusty very quickly (mine did!).

What is she able to do now? Can she creatively spell simple words? Sound out phonetic CVC words? Does she have a good grasp of letter sounds and letter blends?

Does her school teach phonics or something like balanced literacy?

Lots of rhyming and breaking apart words, e.g pop, take away the p at the beginning and you have op, put a t there and you have top or a h there and you have hop -- fun to do this with letter magnets or cut-out letters
