In her case she did ones where she stayed on a college campus so it definitely wasn’t “camp” but it was a great opportunity to develop some independence, meet people from all over etc. etc. I can’t speak to what it would be like to go to an old fashioned summer camp for the first time at the older end, but I can tell you that special interest summer programs don’t have “camp culture” in the same groups of friends returning every year so it’s much easier to show up and be a part of things.
Can you share the program?

I’m desperate to find a foreign language study for teens like I did when I was a teenager but Google is not helping. All I can find are the short “volunteer” abroad things. Mine was a month abroad where we took language classes, toured cultural locations, had free time to explore, etc.
