What’s weird (for around here, at least) is that APS doesn’t finish school until after the middle of June.

It’s because APS couldn’t get a Kings Dominion waiver when the rest of you did. This is the first school year we’ve been eligible, and the school board decided to ease us into the transition after so many parents pitched a fit that starting two weeks earlier than usual would run their vacation plans.

APS doesn’t need a waiver any longer. The state voted to let school systems start before Labor Day last year. They were all set to, but the pandemic pushed the start of the school year back.

It wasn't because APS couldn't get a waiver before - they never asked for one. They were going to do so two years ago but "the community" cried "You can't do that! You can't shorten our summer with only six months' notice! We've made vacation plans!" So they decided to postpone the earlier start to the next year, which would have been this past school year. But then COVID and they decided they needed more time to prepare for opening virtually. For what good that did. So it's APS who is finally getting around to starting before Labor Day; not finally getting permission to.

Are you kidding? That's horrible! Why would they do that to the kids?

Sorry that happened in DCPS but I can't say I am surprised. People in Arlington complain about the schools sometimes, but I am finding them to be so much better than DC. Cross the river, PP!! We have better schools and just as much walkability depending on where you live.

Then why are you asking why Arlington still has school, for cryin' out loud? Arlington still didn't start school before Labor Day; so our school year still extended to June 18th.
Next year, we'll finally start before Labor Day; but due to all the added days off (not for religious observances, but coincidentally scheduled accordingly), we'll still be in school until mid-June.
