It doesn't take a village. It takes a responsible parent. Mom CAN work but she needs to get a responsible adult to look after her FIVE kids. A 14 year old is not qualified to watch 4 kids plus manage her own education. She clearly has money for the things important to her like her hair and nails. She can pay for a adult babysitter or have the kids go with their Dads'. Its not the neighbors job to take care of her kids.

Mom just recently tried returning to work. The 14 year old may have already been out of school for the summer. She might want to babysit as most 14 year olds would not not want to have a babysitter in their home. The article did say that mom was returning to work, for a few hours, a day, not all day, so it might be harder to find an adult to babysit for a few hours a day.

Her village is the guy who fathered the five kids. Where is he?

He might be providing some spousal or child support since she just recently tried returning to work.

An alarm on the door isn’t going to do anything if the parent isn’t in hearing distance. Hence the word ‘alone’.

If it were as loud as a smoke alarm, then everyone would hear it.

The parent literally wasn’t in the neighborhood. There is no way to ‘hear’ it and the reason why the neighbor called the cops.

The 14 year old would have heard it and could have stopped her brother from going to the neighbors.

This is another article. This looks like a beautiful and happy family. Mom is probably doing her best and her daughter must feel just awful about the whole situation.
