This was me in college and law school, and I agree that is was never really a problem. I don’t tend to sweat much at all though, and I take a shower every night before bed. If left to my own devices, I’d probably change them once a month, but DH is OCD about the sheets (especially since I got nice linen ones) and does them once or twice a week. He’s become a vacuum fiend as well. Strangely, neither he nor any of the kids notices a dirty kitchen counter or food left in the sink, which drives me insane.

To answer the actual question, I have been to the house of a single mom I know through work who works 60+ hours a week and I highly doubt cleans. The house just felt gross to be in. I was there maybe 5 years ago and distinctly remembers the baseboards which were all caked with dirt and dust. I don't know how people live like that.
A guy I used to date lived in a grimy home. I recognized it as a red flag and continued because it wasn't completely disgusting but now I realize it reflected his mental state.

Pre-pandemic we had weekly cleaners but have not had them back since March 2020. At first I kept up cleaning but then realized that I had to pick and chose. My DH does not clean and I got overwhelmes. The main bad things that happen is that I feel gross and unhappy, but eventually you do stop “seeing” some of the filth, like really dirty sinks. (The sink thing really is not rational because they only take a second to wipe out, but even that got daunting when I was working FT, midpandemic, dealing with DL, totally overwhelmed.) The worst thing is indoor allergies from dust, and carpet beetles.

I keep the kitchen functional and do whatever’s necessary to prevent/eliminate bad smells, mold, etc. but I don’t clean regularly. Had a cleaning person come in a half day per week for 10 years, but she left the US the summer before COVID, so I’m headed into year 2 of no cleaning help during/after a period of unusually intense HH occupancy/usage.
Trying to get house ready for an influx of visitors in a couple of weeks which is a PITA, but other than that, no problem. Big house is both a blessing and a curse in this context. If I lived in a studio apartment, I’d have to keep it clean regularly — and that wouldn’t be an overwhelming task (BTDT). You can kick the cleaning can farther down the road when you have lots of room, but once everything is a mess, it’s a big project to get it back in shape.

Not the PP but I change my bedsheets maybe every other month, so more like 5-6 times per year, but it could be 3-4.

My FIL (divorced, has money) doesn't clean some rooms and doesn't have cleaners. When he is in a relationship the woman usually cleans or gets cleaners, but the rest of the time it is disgusting. All surfaces that are not high touch have a layer of dust, high touch surfaces are vaguely sticky, and the floor has dust bunnies all around the edges of rooms and hallways. There is a thick coat of dog fur on the dog's spot on the couch. My DH swears his father just doesn't see filth.

fyi, nowadays a roomba or eufy (robot vacuum cleaners) can help a lot with ambient dust and dirt.
