That seems kind of dismissive. It’s a big deal to the niece, so it warrants more than changing the subject.

I think letting them know you support them, asking about pronouns, and asking if there’s anything they need would be good ideas. It’s great that you’re being supportive. Make conversation, don’t push if they seem uncomfortable, and be open. Don’t conflate sexuality and gender.
